By T.A. Mock
The battle between the Houston Texans and the New York Giants showcases two of the game’s best wide receivers. DeAndre Hopkins will stake his claim as the better wide receiver over Odell Beckham Jr.
The Houston Texans are having their home opener in this week three tilt against the New York Giants. You can catch the game on Fox on local channels at 12:00 pm central time. Hopefully, being back home in front of their fans will give the Texans the extra boost they need to get their first victory.
The Texans have one of the most feared wide receivers in the game in DeAndre Hopkins. The Giants also have one of the most feared wide receivers in the game in Odell Beckham Jr. The two will take the field against each other this Sunday in a competition to stake their claim as the best receiver in the NFL.
Across 81 games, Hopkins has 6,053 yards from 427 receptions. 37 of those receptions went for touchdowns. That’s an average of more than 1,000 yards a season and about seven touchdowns a season. He also averages 74.7 yards a game. He has also played with poor quarterback play the majority of his career.
Across 49 games, Beckham has collected 4,586 yards from 328 receptions. 38 of those receptions went for touchdowns. That’s an average of 917 yards per season and about seven touchdowns a season. That’s an average of 93.6 yards per game. Beckham has had Eli Manning quarterbacking for him for his entire career.
The play of both of these guys has garnered them both new, exuberant contracts. Before the start of last season, Hopkins inked a five year, $81 million deal with $49 million guaranteed. To start this season, Beckham inked a five year, $90 million deal with $65 million guaranteed. Both were the highest of the position at their respective signings.
So, it’s fair to say both of these receivers are at the tops of their position. They have produced like it for a long time. They both have these new contracts that pay them like it. They also both have incredible highlight reels that prove it.
Sunday will be an excellent time for these two to show off what they’ve got. Sunday, both players will be battling for their claim as the best wide receiver in the game of football. Sure, Antonio Brown and Julio Jones are up there too but, facing off against one another is a stage unlike any other.

So far this season, Hopkins has graded out as the better wideout according to Pro Football Focus (subscription required), with an 81 overall and an 80.8 receiving grade. Beckham has graded out as a 72.5 overall and a 72.4 receiving grade. For their careers, they are evenly matched but, Hopkins gets the edge with an average of 82.05 for his career while Beckham has an 81.02 grade for his career.
The Houston Texans as a whole are extremely hungry. The first two weeks of the season were an extreme disappointment, Hopkins hasn’t performed poorly but, he’s wanting a victory more than anything else and will show out to get it.
The hometown crowded and a reinvigorated Deshaun Watson will help Hopkins outshine OBJ. Hopkins will continue to climb the rankings of the best wide receivers in the league. OBJ may be more flashy at times in general and in this game but, Hopkins and the Houston Texans will come out victorious in more ways than one.
