The Houston Texans have dropped to 0-2 following two very disappointing showings to start the season. However, there is a silver lining to this abysmal start.

Man, oh man. I don’t think anyone saw the Houston Texans starting the season 0-2. Sure, losing to the New England Patriots was frustrating but, it was an understandable loss. However, coming into the first divisional game against a Titans team that was down Marcus Mariota, it was widely expected the Texans would run away with this one.

The Titans converted a successful fake punt for a 66 yard touchdown in the first quarter. After that, the Texans appeared to be behind the eight ball. From there, they scrapped and fought their way to regain the lead but, unfortunately, the Titans were able to regain the lead for good in the fourth quarter.

A second loss in a row to start the 2018 season led to a ton of frustration across the Houston Texans fan base. A lot of the frustration was thrown at head coach Bill O’Brien, for good reason.

Against the Patriots, there was controversy with a Rob Gronkowski catch and while it was within two minutes of the half and the team couldn’t challenge themselves, O’Brien could have called a timeout to allow more time for the review officials to “challenge” the play.

Yesterday, against the Titans there was some frustration with how the last few minutes of both halves were played. This is nothing new in the O’Brien era and people have voiced frustrations before. Some even want BOB’s job but, with a freshly signed contract extension, he won’t be going anywhere until after next season at the earliest.

There is also a lot of speculation on the chemistry of the offense. The first team offense hardly got any time together in the preseason and Deshaun Watson is still shaking off some rust after not having played meaningful snaps in over 10 months.

Statistically, the Houston Texans improved from week one to week two. In week one, the Texans gained a total of 343 yards against the Patriots but, only about half of those were through the air. Yesterday, the Texans gained 458 yards against the Titans and 310 of those were through the air.

So, the team, offensively, improved so that is silver lining number one and cause for hope as the season continues to impress. Watson looked better, Lamar Miller continued to look more explosive than last year, and DeAndre Hopkins and Will Fuller both had wonderful games with 110+ yards and a touchdown each.

The other, maybe even more important, silver lining should give the Houston Texans and fans alike even more hope for the rest of the season. Both games were extremely different in-game though the results were roughly the same. Both games were still very winnable in the final minutes of the contest.

That, honestly, is impressive considering how bad the play appeared at times in both games. The offense and defense both had very, very low points in both games and against the Titans, the team also had a very obvious special teams low point.

However, the fact that the team has been able to stay in contention all the way to the end of the game is a great silver lining to these losses. The team has honestly played very poorly these past two weeks, yet, they have remained highly competitive.

Once the Houston Texans shake off all of the rust from past injuries and really begin to build up their chemistry on both sides of the ball, this team could really take off. So, there isn’t a major need to panic. These two silver linings can give the team and fans hope for the rest of the season.

The Houston Texans have disappointed to start the season to be sure. However, these silver linings provide hope. Chemistry will be built and wins will come.
