Houston Astros: Predicting the stacked playoff pitching rotation
By T.A. Mock
Game One: Justin Verlander
This one should be obvious. Justin Verlander has been an ace-level pitcher since before the majority of the roster was even in the minor leagues. The Houston Astros acquired him last year at the August 31st waiver deadline to be the ace that has the ability to win a game single-handedly.
Verlander has shown nothing of to the contrary since arriving in Houston. He was pitching at a historic level at the end of last year and the beginning of this season. Sure he’s had bumps in the road this season but, he’ll be more than ready come game one of the playoffs.
Game Two: Gerrit Cole
Gerrit Cole has been phenomenal this year, there is no doubt about that. He blew past his previous career strikeout total over a month ago and has been one of the most dominant pitchers this year. He’ll be able to handle every lineup any of these teams can throw his way.
Game Three: Dallas Keuchel
Dallas Keuchel gets the nod as the third starter for me. Keuchel has faced quite a bit of bad luck this year which caused his numbers to inflate early on and his most recent start against the Red Sox might leave a bad taste but, he’s the best man for the job.
These three guys should be the go-to guys for the starts the entire postseason run. These three may form the best starting trio in the playoffs. However, three guys can’t always pitch every single game. If the Astros need to trot out a fourth starter it’ll likely be Charlie Morton or, if AJ Hinch wants to get creative, an opener could be in play, meaning it would be a bullpen game.
