The Houston Texans signed Kayvon Webster to a one-year deal last week but with him starting the season on the IR, concerns for CB depth continue. Why? Look.

The Houston Texans will start up their season against the New England Patriots tomorrow and it seems that this team will be primed up to do battle against one of the league’s perennially-best group of 53 men out there.

All you have to say is Tom Brady, Bill Belichick and the Pats in one sentence and you have the feeling that it’s going to be a dogfight no matter who surrounds them to help them be successful.  It’s sort of been a smoke-and-mirrors type mantra with the aforementioned association but they seem to do it quite well with overachieving talent.

The Pats don’t have Julian Edelman, they’ve lost Brandin Cooks to free agency and Chris Hogan will be the coveted receiving target for this game.  He had two touchdowns in their last meeting in 2017 but to say he won’t be effective is definitely an understatement, considering how much production Belichick can squeeze out of his players.

Plus, the Houston Texans will be trotting out 34-year-old Johnathan Joseph, the under-performing Kevin Johnson and the relatively inexperienced Aaron Colvin on the task of disrupting their defenders for Sunday.  I know exactly what I’m going to see out of Joseph because he’s been able to be effective enough game in and out but I’m afraid Johnson is going to find a way to get hurt and Colvin may slip in some stretches because he’s still getting acclimated to this system.

Which certainly brings me to the topic of Kayvon Webster being signed.  Although the Houston

Texans didn’t invest much — he’s on a one-year, $2 million deal — I think this team could use more reinforcements.  Is Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie that bad to where they wouldn’t be able to give him a shot?

By the way, Webster has been ruled OUT for Sunday’s game against the Pats.

Webster is still reeling from Achilles injury that he sustained late last season and it’s uncertain — at least for now — when he will be ready to help the secondary out.  But with Tyrann Mathieu and Kareem Jackson moving over to the safety position, Romeo Crennel can easily slide in one of those two to help.

This is likely why the Houston Texans may not be as concerned and are willing to wait for Webster to get healthy.  Because once he’s available, I think he’ll immediately jump into a expanded role as a defensive back.  But what if Johnson has the best performance of his career?  Maybe this whole conversation that I’m having right now will be moot.

So what’s the over/under on how many games Webster will miss if it’s set to THREE?  I’m taking the over because I’m not confident that I’m going to see this guy any time soon.

We’ll have to see and if our cornerbacks struggle tomorrow out on the gridiron, I won’t be blaming them but the Houston Texans for taking a laissez-faire approach to ensure this important unit has enough depth.

And I’m spent.
