Houston Astros: Six guys with a shot to get called up when rosters expand
By T.A. Mock
Kyle Tucker, OF
Kyle Tucker was/is/continues to be a great prospect. Whenever he’s in the majors, he’s one of the youngest guys in the entire league. So, he still has time to get it all figured out but, he has disappointed so far in the majors.
He hasn’t been swinging the bat well at all, .154 average and a .212 slugging percentage. He has only collected two extra-base hits, one double and one triple. The one redeeming part of his game right now, in the majors, is his eye. He’s tallied 5 walks, making his OBP .254. To be sure, this has only taken place across 20 games.

His fielding would make the offense easier to swallow but, he hasn’t adjusted well to the intricacies of Minute Maid Park. All in all, this is still a young kid who still has some figuring out to do. Sure, it’s been slightly disappointing but, he still has all the time in the world to turn it around. Hopefully, that happens in September when the fire of a chase can get him back on track.
Dean Deetz, RHP
Dean Deetz is the lone guy to have yet to make a major league appearance on this list. However, that would have likely changed had he not missed 80 games this year due to a PEDs suspension. But, he should get his chance in a few days.
The Houston Astros selected Deetz in the 11th round of the 2014 draft and he has had some ups and downs but, he’s destroyed all minor league levels at some point in time. Deetz has electric stuff that projects well to the bigs.
He has pitched excellently since coming off of his suspension and has little left to prove in the minors. His fastball whips at the plate extremely hard and he has a plus curveball and an above-average changeup. Deetz could get called up and never sent back down.
Any one of these six guys could come up and help out the Houston Astros. None of the six are going to take meaningful ABs or pitches away from the team’s studs but, they provide excellent depth and versatility that can help this team get to the playoffs whole and on fire.
