Houston Astros: Reflecting on the anniversary of Hurricane Harvey
Where do the 2017 Astros rank Among Most Mythological Sports Teams?
A few days ago, I was writing up with a list of some of the greatest and recognized sports teams in history. For starters, you got your usual teams like the 1927 Yankees, 1985 Bears, 1996 Bulls, and 1980 U.S Men’s Olympic Hockey. You also have some dynasties like the 1970’s Pittsburgh Steelers, 1960’s Boston Celtics, and the 1976-79 Montreal Canadiens.
In truth, I came up with 100 sports teams on the list and Houston has three teams on it. This leads us to the question of where in our opinion do the 2017 Astros rank among the greatest of teams.
Well, I think if we were to create the Bible of sports history, we would have to separate the stories by way of chapters. Ranging from greatest teams, players, and moments, each of us would have to carefully pick one chapter that the 2017 Astros would be in.
I think what makes a great team is that you can instantly remember the moments that stand out to you. Close your eyes and picture the moment when Altuve hits three homers against Boston in Game 1, the defensive plays of Alex Bregman and George Springer against the Yankees, and the incredible epic wins against the Dodgers.
It’s hard to say that the 2017 team was the greatest team of all-time. But on a list of 100 teams, does there need to be? Maybe if the list is about resiliency, then the Astros would have a case of being number one.
Aftermath
Lance McCullers said it best that he doesn’t feel the Astros are legends. But that the team is legendary. And in a way, he’s right. The 2017 Astros are a legendary team not just to the city of Houston, but also nationwide. That’s why Sports Illustrated picked us as the best team of 2017.

That’s why the ESPY’s decided to give us the award for the best team over the Philadelphia Eagles and Golden State Warriors. Sure, we had a talented team. But there was more to the story than just a great team and people are inspired by that. You can’t script these moments even if there are still those who feel the story was rigged.
However, you can say that what we saw was one of the greatest moments in sports history from August to November. The nation saw Houston in a different way during that span and they felt we deserved some love and respect out of that for our toughness.
The Story Continues
To think we’re dealing with even more adversity on the team in a time of crisis in our nation says a lot about how we became iconic in a way. As we currently embark on a tough pennant race heading into the month of September, we can only reflect on that August day when the Astros went from a strong contender into a legendary team.
Sure, we would like to win it again this year and in the coming years. But there is nothing that will change the feeling of 2017. We’re now part of a legacy of champions. Whether Harvey played a part in it or not, it definitely led to the craziest roller coaster ride of emotions.
As I finish looking at that entry, I still can’t believe we actually did it. I should’ve been the MVP. But I won’t brag because I was just a regular guy wanting to help inspire others to find happiness even during a tough time. I think even if it was 0.001% impact, I think I did my job. Well, with 2017 locked in a safe place in our hearts, it’s time to gear up for a 2018 run.
