Houston Texans: Predicting the final 53 man roster
By T.A. Mock
Starters: Tyrann Mathieu, Justin Reid
The Houston Texans finally have a commanding presence in Mathieu in the backend of their defense. They haven’t had a guy like this since Glover Quin manned the safety position in the early days of his career.
Mathieu should have the best season of his career finally getting entrenched in one spot on defense. He’ll disrupt every facet of the game this year as he can cover like no other and isn’t afraid to lay the hammer in run support.
I’m giving Reid the nod to start the season as Mathieu’s primary running mate. He is a rare talent that should develop into a terrific player. He has a very high football IQ and should make a great impact right away.
Reserves: Kareem Jackson, Treston Decoud, Corey Moore, Andre Hal*
I like Jackson off of the bench more than I like Reid off of the bench. Jackson provides a great amount of versatility for the Texans and can cover the slot out of the safety position. He’ll likely still get a ton of playing time.
Decoud and Moore will round out this safety group. Both are good, young players who can provide needed depth for this team. Decoud is still learning the position but, he should be just fine. Moore has played well for the Texans in years past.
Hal is currently battling cancer and would be on this list otherwise. The Texans will hold his spot for a long time. He’s on the non-football injury list and can still be around all team activities.
