The Houston Texans currently have Brandon Weeden as the top option behind Deshaun Watson. What if the team traded for Teddy Bridgewater to back him up instead?

Deshaun Watson took over for Tom Savage at halftime of game one in the 2017 season. He probably should’ve been the Houston Texans starter all along but, that’s last year’s news. Watson then proceeded to light the entire NFL on fire.

He jumped out of the gate and through for about 1,700 yards in seven games to pair with 19 touchdowns. He was atop of the rookie of the year conversations and was even garnering talks for MVP. But, all of that dissipated when it was announced that he suffered a torn ACL.

After Watson went down, the Houston Texans turned back to Savage. And to put it simply, Savage was abysmal during his tenure as the starter. He barely accumulated 1,400 yards and threw more interceptions than touchdowns. The Texans went 1-6 with him as the starter.

Three offensive linemen on the rise. light. Must Read

After Savage went down with a concussion, the Texans turned to journeyman and former Texan TJ Yates. Yates had some glorious moments in his first stint with the Texans but he shouldn’t be starting games in the NFL anymore. He threw for just over 500 yards with four touchdowns and threw more than half his passes for incompletions. Taylor Heinicke also saw some time at QB before getting hurt.

Needless to say, the Houston Texans fielded three below average backups after their star quarterback went down. To address this problem the Houston Texans brought back Brandon Weeden and added Joe Webb. Weeden hasn’t played a regular season snap since 2015 with the Texans and Webb played snaps as a quarterback last year for the first time since 2011.

Fortunately, both have looked capable so far this preseason but, it’s the preseason. The majority of the snaps they’ve both played have been against backups and backups of backups. So while it has been nice to see them throw the ball well, this isn’t exactly instilling a ton of confidence. Especially considering Watson is coming off of an ACL injury. Granted, Watson shouldn’t have any limitations come the regular season as he doesn’t really have any now.

The Houston Texans need to pursue a new backup quarterback. One of our experts, Brian Patterson, speculated earlier in the offense that if Brett Hundley were released. But, why not pursue the best one available. That man would be Teddy Bridgewater.

More from House of Houston

The Jets should be looking to offload Bridgewater for whatever they can get because Sam Darnold is the quarterback of the present and future. They have Josh McCown entrenched as their $10 million backup. So, this all makes Bridgewater expendable.

Bridgewater represents a massive upgrade over both Weeden and Webb. He could execute a very similar offense to Watson. Bridgewater is also fully recovered from a knee injury that was way worse than Watson’s so, he could provide insight into recovery as well.

The Jets will likely initially command a very high price for Bridgewater’s services. The Texans shouldn’t pay a first rounder or more for Bridgewater but, if the price falls to a second rounder they should at least kick the tires.

Next. Three defenders who have earned playing time. dark

Even though Watson looks great and is healthy and good to go for week one, his backup needs to be addressed. I doubt the Houston Texans will actually trade for Bridgewater but, keep an eye on guys being released as the season gets closer, I expect the team to not escape the preseason without addressing the position again.
