Houston Texans: 5 players trending up/down after first preseason game
By T.A. Mock
Trending Down: Josh Keyes, LB, #48
The Houston Texans claimed Josh Keyes off of waivers from the Cleveland Browns earlier in the offseason. Keyes has been renowned for his special teams efforts throughout his career but, he’s never really made an impact on defense throughout his three-year career across four different teams.
Keyes could definitely still make this team and have an impact on special teams but, his stock is trending down when it comes to defensive contributions. Keyes was out of place several times and took several bad angles. However, he probably had the biggest hit of the night and maybe of the preseason so far, maybe I’m making too early of an assessment.
Trending Up: Kennan Gilchrist, LB, #49
Oh me, oh my. Kennan Gilchrist made quite the impression Thursday night. After spending the majority of the 2017 season on the Houston Texans practice squad, Gilchrist was signed to a Future/Reserve contract in January. If tonight is any indication, he looks to reward the Texans on that.
He absolutely flew around the football field last night. Sideline to sideline he was consistently around the football. He amassed nine tackles, one of which was for a loss. Gilchrist is slightly undersized at 6’1″ 230 lbs but his athleticism is off the charts. He had incredible angles as well.
Gilchrist is deadset for at least the practice squad again but, if he keeps playing like this it’ll be highway robbery if he doesn’t make the roster. At the minimum, he has the makings of a standout special teamer.
