Houston Astros: Andrew McCutchen should be priority number one
By T.A. Mock
Houston Astros outfielder George Springer appeared to severely injure his left hand/wrist in Sunday’s game. Acquiring Andrew McCutchen is now more important than ever.
Somebody get the bubble wrap! The Houston Astros have been dropping like flies recently. George Springer is the most recent victim of the injury bug. He was sliding into second on a stolen base attempt in the fourth inning.
He slid into the bag hands first and the Dodgers cover man placed the glove right on the bag. Springer’s left hand slid up on the glove and bag and fingers went everywhere.
Springer immediately began rolling around on the ground behind second and AJ Hinch and the team’s trainer were running out onto the field right away. The trainer began mashing on Springer’s hand and thumb to see where it was hurting.
He then looked up to Hinch and appeared to say something along the lines of “Yeah, he’s done.” Springer was pulled from the game then and there was replaced in center field by Jake Marisnick. We don’t know the full extent of Springer’s injury yet but, it appears that he’ll miss an extended amount of time.
Marisnick has been hitting .333 in his past 11 games prior to this one so, he has been trending up but, the Houston Astros will need more than that to continue their quest to repeat. The team will need to look outside of the organization for help. I previously talked about the potential of acquiring Andrew McCutchen in the article above but, he now needs to be the team’s top priority.

McCutchen could come in and plug the hole in the outfielder while Springer is out. He would provide excellent defense, a good bat, and good speed. He has a proven track record of fielding and slugging in this league that could help this team in their quest to repeat as champs.
Cutch could take over for Springer directly in center. He could also shift to right field with Josh Reddick manning left field and Marisnick holding down center. Cutch has never played left in his field but he could potentially play there as well.
The Giants haven’t shown signs of selling yet but, it could be coming down the pipe soon. The Houston Astros will actually get a good look at Cutch Monday and Tuesday as the Astros wrap up their road trip in San Francisco with a two-game series.
As soon as they look to sell, the Houston Astros should pounce at the opportunity to add Cutch. He’ll add a veteran presence that’ll hold the team over for the time being and he can be another great contributor down the stretch when everyone is, hopefully, healthy.
McCutchen is hitting .264/.355/.424 with 12 home runs, 64 RBIs, and nine stolen bases. He also has 25 doubles and 2 triples to his name. His production would be a welcome addition to this outfield.
