Reason #3:  Daryl Morey’s analytics recipe

Analytics is all about analysis for the better. Daryl Morey, who is also a MIT graduate, has found a love for this tactic.

He has revolutionized not only the Houston Rockets but the NBA world with his love for analytics. He has spread the idea to many sports teams all across the world to where analytics is taken into consideration for almost every single move made by a team. Here are just a few of the many..

1. True Shooting Percentage

In the example I mentioned earlier pertaining to shooting, I had arguably taken the most laziest and inaccurate method to determine who is the best shooter in the NBA. However, Daryl Morey had used his love for analytics to create another statistical measure in the NBA for shooting. It is known by many as, “True Shooting Percentage”, which is defined as according to Basketball Reference.

Must Read: Hinkie likely had a role in Morey's 'decision'

True Shooting Percentage: the formula is PTS/ (2 * TSA). True shooting percentage is a measure of shooting efficiency that takes into account field goals, 3-point field goals, and free throws.

Though it may not be exactly the best shooter in the NBA calculator, it’s a helluva lot better than that field goal percentage crap I used.

2. The Efficient Shots

Morey wants almost nothing to do with things that waste his time.

I mean isn’t that all of us? But we are procrastinating a lot, that wastes time.

Anyway, Morey only wants efficient shots. Using analytics, Morey was able to define that efficient shots for a basketball team are either the shots with the highest reward or the quick and easy shots. To be more specific, the shots include three-pointers, dunks, layups and free throws.

Not all analytics involve numbers.

You won’t see the Houston Rockets take may other shots, excepting Chris Paul. He is the only guy you will be seeing firing mid-range shots. Simply to space the floor for the three-point snipers.

Daryl has also stated his prophecy of shooting in the yearly MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference and because of his continual emphasis on his perception, many people have called his philosophy “Moreyball.”
