There has been a lot of speculation at what the Houston Astros should do at the trade deadline. Silence is the best option for the team. Here’s why.

That’s right, the Houston Astros should do nothing at the deadline. There has been a ton of speculation about what the Astros would do. The bullpen has been one of the biggest sources of speculation. Should the team trade for Brad Hand? What about Raisel Iglesias? Maybe Zach Britton from Baltimore?

There have also been quite a few rumors about how the team could upgrade in the field. Khris Davis is a big bat that could add a ton of power. The Houston Astros were also linked to White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu. It was even speculated that Wilson Ramos from Tampa could be a fit.

Adding any one of these guys would, without a doubt, make this team better. They are all proven, All-Star caliber players. The vast majority of them would also be guaranteed to be around for more than the rest of the 2018 season.

However, the Houston Astros don’t need to add any of these guys in order to repeat as champions. Sure, any one of them would help the team towards the goal. However, the potential cost just doesn’t outweigh the gain. Yes, the gain is a potential shot at repeat champions. But, the team shouldn’t pursue any of them.

It sounds crazy, I’m right there with you. I’ve covered quite a few players that could make this team better. Not improving the team through trade this year seems to define logic. The team isn’t fielding All-Stars at every position, I mean the team isn’t above average at every roster spot. But, that doesn’t mean the Astros need to cash in on a half to a year and a half rental.

More from House of Houston

Almost all of those guys will cost the Houston Astros a good chunk of their farm system. Yordan Alvarez is likely one of the guys that any of the above teams will covet. He is big and strong with a great bat. He can also defend well with positional versatility. There are several other prospects that could easily help the team in the future that Astros would have to give up.

There has also been a lot of improvement from the players currently on the team. Alex Bregman has taken the next step to superstardom. Tony Sipp’s resurgence is in full swing and he’s back to pitching like his 2015 self again. In fact, the bullpen as a whole has been outstanding the past couple of months.

The Houston Astros have also seen some of those key minor league guys get to the majors and produce. Kyle Tucker was 100% untouchable before getting promoted. His hasn’t taken the league by storm but, there have been flashes of his great potential. Cionel Perez took Ken Giles place in the pen and has flashed his electric stuff and swing and miss potential.

The team has shown vast amounts of improvements as the season has progressed. The prospects the team would have to give up would be tough to lose. There just isn’t a big hole the team needs to fill to stomach guys losing playing time or giving up top prospects. Justin Verlander was worth the prospects and filled a huge need. I’m just not convinced that there is a guy out there to greatly improve this team.
