Houston Rockets: The top 30 Rockets players of all time
By T.A. Mock
30. Don Kojis, SF, 1967 – 1970
Don Kojis is one of the few guys on this list that played for the team when they were in San Diego. In fact, he is the only guy on the list played solely in San Diego and never in Houston. He only played for the Rockets three of his twelve seasons but, they were the best three years of his career.
Kojis averaged 19.6 points, 9.1 rebounds, and 2.3 assists on 44% shooting. Remember, they didn’t keep track of threes when he was playing. He also made the only two All-Star games of his career in his first two seasons as a Rocket. His last year was the beginning of the decline in his career but, it still ranks as the third best of his career.
29. Patrick Beverley, PG/SG, 2012 – 2017
Patrick Beverley is an absolute dog. He is a grit and grind, hustle player that drives the opposing team nuts. He is the type of player you adore when he’s on your team but, abhor when he’s not. His biggest calling card is and forever will be his defense. He has the ability to completely lock down an opposing player.
However, he’ll never be an offensive powerhouse or traditional point guard. He never averaged more than four assists a game. But, he shot 38% from three as a Rocket. His career line as a Rocket ended at 9.3 points, 4.1 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 1.3 steals per game.
28. Rodney McCray, SF/PF, 1983 – 1988
Rodney McCray was one of the highest drafted players in Houston Rockets history. He was selected third overall but, he unfortunately never quite lived up to that billing. He did, however, carve out a pretty solid career, just not what was expected of him.
The single most impressive stat about McCray is that he only missed six games during his tenure as a Rocket. The rest of his stats are good but, not great. He averaged 12.5 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 3.8 assists on 52% shooting. Very solid but, definitely played under his expectations, which is why he is where he is on this list.
27. Trevor Ariza, SF, 2009, 2014 – 2018
Ariza has had two stints with the Houston Rockets. The first game in 2009 and it was an interesting one. The Rockets were trying to make one last run with Tracy McGrady. The team was retooling and one of the guys they brought on was Ariza. He had one of the best statistical seasons of his career but, also one of the most inefficient.
The Rockets then brought him back for the past four seasons. He’ll probably be most remembered for his shooting meltdown in the playoffs this past year. However, he was an incredibly solid player for the Rockets. His three-point shot and outstanding defense allowed the team to begin to form the identity they possess today.
26. Robert Reid, SF/SG, 1977 – 1988
Reid was a very solid rotational player for the Rockets for a very long time. He retired after his age 27 season but, returned just one year later and played for eight more seasons. He had a reputation for always being calm, cool, and collected. Reid’s stats weren’t phenomenal, neither was his efficiency but, he makes this list for his longevity and consistent production.
