The Houston Rockets summer league is well underway. There figures to only be a few spots open on the roster, let’s take a look at one guy that should make the roster.

The Houston Rockets had a pretty great 2017-18 season. They set a franchise record for wins in a regular season with 65 to pair with only 17 losses. This record secured the number one seed and home court advantage in throughout the playoffs and, overall, was best in the West.

The Houston Rockets looked like the favorite to cruise through the playoffs. Then, the matchup we were all waiting for, the Golden State Warriors. It was a tough battle but, unfortunately, the Rockets couldn’t overcome the Warriors in seven games.

There are several things that could be attributed to the Rockets faltering against the Warriors. The obvious being that the Warriors are just a really good team and its a tough fight against them always. Chris Paul’s injury is an easy one to jump to, especially looking at the Warriors series specifically.

But, enough pondering about the what-ifs and what-could’ve-beens in the playoffs. It won’t do anyone any good or make the Houston Rockets any better. So, as fans, we need to move on and look towards the 2018-19 season. The first step of the season is the Summer League. Here are the players on the roster.

Who has a shot at the roster?

This roster is actually very intriguing. There are names that are familiar either from their professional career or from their college career. Chinanu Onuaku grew some fame with his “granny shot” free throw attempts. Rob Gray is a U of H legend. Trevon Duval was highly recruited and landed at Duke. This roster should compete pretty well.

Zhou Qi and rookies De’Anthony Melton and Vincent Edwards are virtual locks for the roster. The Houston Rockets really like Qi’s potential as a stretch four or five. Melton is an intriguing, yet inexperienced prospect. Edwards has solid 3-and-D potential fresh out of Purdue.

But, the guy that has a shot to make an impact off of the Summer League roster is Danuel House. House is a native Houstonian who played collegiately at U of H and Texas A&M. He went undrafted in 2016 and signed with the Wizards. But, he only logged one NBA minute during that season.

More from House of Houston

Last year, he caught on with the Pheonix Suns and played in 23 games while starting three. He averaged 6.6 points per game for the Suns last year. But, in four of his final five games, House scored in double figures. Albeit, for a tanking Suns team.

However, if you look at his per 36 numbers, he looks like a serviceable role player. He scored 13.6 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 2.2 assists. Unfortunately, he only shot 26% from three. But, if you look back at his college stats, he had a year where he shot 40%. So, he has potential be a marksman.

House also stands at 6’7″ and has great length on the wing. He never averaged great steal numbers but, his length gives him great defensive potential. With the proper motivation and energy, he could transform into a solid 3-and-D player off the bench for the Houston Rockets.

So, House has a phenomenal shot to make the roster. The Houston Rockets are expecting big things for the third-year pro. His hometown team could be his best shot at carving out an NBA career.
