It appears that the Houston Astros are dipping into their minor league system depth again. This time, it’s for A.J. Reed!

One of the many assets the Houston Astros have is depth. When one player goes down for any reason, another is at the ready to fill in. A.J. Reed is now one of those players about to do another fill in for the team.

Recently, word came out about Yuli Gurriel going on the paternity list. He joins Reymin Guduan as another Astros player bringing new life into the world this year already. Honestly, can you blame these fellas after they just won the World Series last fall?

All joking aside, that leaves room for A.J. Reed to get the call up from AAA Fresno. Admittedly, I have always been skeptical of A.J. Reed.  However, Hinch is the one making the decisions, and rightfully so.

Power Forward!

Additionally, Reed has shown tremendous numbers down with the Grizzlies this season. Sporting a healthy .266/.379/.536 slash line, he will certainly add to an already stacked offensive lineup. In a way, he just may be able to prove his skeptics, including myself, wrong.

On the other hand, A.J. Reed has also been showing off his glove as well. In 62 games played at first base in 2018 at Fresno, he has 48 assists and only 6 errors. Reed also has a putout to total chance ratio of 89% (443 out of 497)

Not exactly gold glove caliber plays, to be sure. Still, nothing to sneeze at either. Likely, and deservedly so, Tyler White will still get the lion’s share of starts at that corner of the infield.

But expect A.J. Reed to spot him, as well as some DH to give Evan Gattis a rare off day. Although, with El Oso Blanco recently breaking some franchise records, those off days may be sparse for him in games to come leading to the break.

Nevertheless, A.J. Reed getting called up is a good thing. It shows that the organization hasn’t given up on him, nor should they really. Reed’s presence will show just how stacked the Houston Astros are with the bats, as well has how lethal they really are, can and will be!
