Houston Sports: The nominations for the ESPY Awards
With ESPN announcing the nominees for the upcoming ESPY Awards, it’s no surprise that Houston sports are represented for the awards.
A while ago, I wrote down an entry on the possibility of the Astros and other Houston Sports being snubbed at the upcoming ESPY Awards. Looking back on the entry, I was probably angry at the fact that no matter what we do, it won’t be enough to inspire and amaze everyone. It’s an entry that I hated writing. But, being up there in my previous entries makes me wish I never wrote it down.
Seven-of-Seven
We’ve all heard of the seven deadly sins of pride, envy, gluttony, lust, anger, greed, and sloth (not the animal). Well, I must confess that I’ve fallen victim to all seven of those sins. I have…
- Prided myself to being a fan of the World Series champions.
- Envied other teams and the recognition they get from the national media.
- Gluttonize myself over the thought of these awards things.
- Lusted myself over the idea of receiving one of these awards.
- Angered myself over the thought of being snubbed.
- Greeded myself over wanting more and more of all of the above.
- Been a sloth of not being able to tell myself not to worry about it by not controlling my thoughts about it.
Explain!
I must confess that ever since the World Series, I’ve always hoped that nothing would be the better game than Game 5 or that no team would be more inspiring as the 2017 Astros to win the best team. But as time went on, and more moments were occurring, it got to a point where I just started thinking if there was any way we could at least pick up an award soon.
I know I’ve expressed my frustrations about this to everyone because I just wanted Houston to at least get something from a national basis. But then, I realized that we got something from a national basis. We have a World Series title and we have a great sports city with teams ready to contend for more titles. You don’t play sports to win a dumb award. You play to win the titles.
So as far as I’m concerned, I don’t think we should give a darn about these awards and just enjoy having a great time being a championship city.
And The Nominees Are…
But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be aware of the nominees for our Houston sports teams and we have some nominees up in the categories.
For starters, we have three Houston sports athletes and one game nominated for an award. The three athletes are James Harden, Jose Altuve, and George Springer while Game 5 of the 2017 World Series is nominated for an award.
Altuve is nominated for Best Male Athlete along with Harden as they will both go up against Alexander Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals and Tom Brady.
Altuve is also nominated for best MLB Player against Aaron Judge (Yankees), Mike Trout (Angels), and Max Scherzer (Nationals)
Springer is nominated for best championship performance along with Kevin Durant, Nick Foles, and Donte DiVencenzo of the Villanova Wildcats.
Game 5 of the 2017 World Series is up for best game along with the Georgia-Oklahoma Rose Bowl game and the US-Canada Women’s Hockey Gold Medal matchup.
And of course, the Astros are nominated for best team joining the Golden State Warriors, Philadelphia Eagles, Alabama Crimson Tide, Washington Capitals, and more.
Normally, AJ Hinch would be up for best coach of the year. But this time, ESPN is giving the coach of the year honors to the coaches that were tragically killed in Parkland High School shooting. It’s a respectable and kind gesture to honor those impacted in such a tragedy.
Problems I Have
I shouldn’t care for these awards to tell you the truth. My brother has said it. I got coworkers who say it. Heck, I’m sure I’ll get comments in the comment section agreeing with these two. Truth be told, I have to agree because what’s the point of these awards anyway? It’s becoming such a popularity contest that ESPN is trying to make it a big deal.
Part of the problem is that each sport has a channel now and that they do their own awards shows, which to some degree are better than the ESPY’s. I used to be a fan of the show. But things have changed over the years.

I can’t explain why because I don’t want to offend those who probably do care or don’t see eye-to-eye with me. But I feel I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s best we should just accept that Houston Sports teams nominated for the awards. But, that’s only minor compared to winning a World Series.
My Thoughts
I think there’s a chance we could win one award (probably for the best game). Then again, we might get nothing out of this. Would I be bothered and angry with the result if we don’t win? No! Would I be happy if we do win? Yes! But would the result of these awards change the outcome of the past year? Come on! Do I need to ask that stupid question?
I think the reason why I’m writing this is for two reasons. One: to be thrilled and pleased that we’re getting recognition and going up against the most elite of athletes in other sports. Two: to remind myself that I’m still proud of my teams regardless that no ESPY award would make me want to change my opinion about them.

So in the end, the ESPY’s only another random awards show like the Academy Awards. It would be nice to win, but just being nominated should be good enough. Still, if you want to vote, here’s the link. Let’s just hope we don’t have a Bart Simpson for president moment.
