Houston Rockets: Missing out on the finals can only lead to motivation

With the NBA Finals going on, the result that seemed to be on every basketball fan’s mind is taking shape. For Houston Rockets fans, watching this is wrong and frustrating, especially about how a missed opportunity is making us angry for next year.

I haven’t been on for a few weeks because I needed to take time away. I’m sure most of y’all are still fuming about what I said in the last entry I wrote down. Although I never said the Houston Rockets were literally going to win Game 7 in the article, what my message was that regardless, we gave the Warriors the true challenge that they needed.

But after time to myself and recovering from a depression that made me think about life in general, I realize that what I had said was anything but my own conviction.

I was wrong.

I’ll man up and admit that I’m wrong here unlike many reporters who don’t want to hurt their ego. I said before the Rockets were going to go to the Western Conference Finals and I was right.

I really felt like that we were going to get there and lose to the Warriors, but we could only get better. When I made the prediction, I was sure that was as far as we would go because I knew the Warriors were a good team.

But then, we started to play at a level beyond anything before and all of the sudden, we were a 65-win team and the number one seed in the West. I felt for sure this team had what it took to get to the finals. But I also knew the Warriors were still out there.

I said that if the Rockets were going to win, we would have to do it in seven games. And even if we got to seven, we have nothing to be ashamed of because we showed that we were capable of winning a title and our time will come.

But I was wrong.

Why?

I was wrong for saying all of that because it showed a weakness of being a Houston sports fan. It was definitely the worst feeling for me when the Houston Rockets lost because it made me upset and it made angry because I wish I could go back and take everything I said in the past.

I make an entry trying to ignore that it’s become a win a championship or bust world we live in and find silver linings. Wrong!

Then, I make a thought that maybe with what happened at Santa Fe High School, the Houston Rockets would use that as motivation to win a title the same way the Astros did when Harvey happened. Boy, was I wrong?

Obviously, when Chris Paul went down, I knew it would be tough to win the series without him. But I thought we could at least try and play. We did compete in Game 6, for about a half. Then I was hoping and praying that Chris Paul would play. I was certain he would and I was for sure positive he would play. Wrong again!

But then, it was announced he wouldn’t play and it hurt a lot. We then had a lead in the game and then for us to miss 27 three-pointers and play like we were desperate behind by ten points late when we were up by eight points in the third quarter was just awful. It was awful.

No question, the Warriors were the better team in the series. But I was wrong for thinking that it would be a win for us by going seven games with the champions because we missed an opportunity.

Quick Thoughts

Paul goes down with an injury. You know he was hurting inside that he couldn’t play.

James Harden might still be named the MVP winner of this season. But to be honest, I could care less about that because I’d much rather win both awards or just a championship.

The refs? Don’t get me started. Something has to be done to fix the problem with the refs and the questionable calls during the series.

The media? They were wrong for thinking the series would be a quick one.

Where the Houston Rockets stand now

We’re stuck with a final that really is all hype and no competition. Sure, it’s interesting to see two teams meet for the fourth straight year and it’s good for ratings. But is it really a rivalry now because they met four years in a row?

No! There’s no competition between the teams now. This might be the right finals for the media and the NBA, but it’s the wrong finals for us. The real finals should be between the Rockets and the Cavaliers or the Celtics.

Instead, we’re living in a world of what might’ve been. Does it hurt? Yep! Does it suck? Sure it does!  Does it get you angry about a missed opportunity? Darn right it does. What can the Rockets do?

The Houston Rockets are going to have to go out and get better right now.

The Future

I won’t make a prediction and I won’t make a guarantee for next year. What I will do is pray. I pray that we get another chance to compete for a trip to the NBA Finals. What I would ask in my prayer is that we play the Golden State Warriors and get another opportunity to beat them.

No one else should matter because there are really two superpowers in the west as we speak. Yes, you got teams on the rise, but I just want another shot at those guys. I want us to get a win in the series against them and not be the Kings to the Lakers or the Pacers to the Heat.

Also, what I would say in my prayer is that we somehow have a chance to put an end to our suffering for the past few years. I pray for an end to our patience, which has been tested for a few years now, to finally live out a dream that we want. Pray that we also want us to be right for once and not wrong.

More from House of Houston

I know there have been talks about the Houston Rockets either getting LeBron James or Paul George, or maybe both. I don’t know if I can see either or on the team now. But it’s that’s the only way I see us getting a championship, so be it. Sign me up. I’ll jump on board that idea then.

All I know is that like every Rockets fan, I want that championship badly. It sucks that we have to go back to square one of the season again for a long journey. Let’s just hope that our time comes for us to be in the hunt for a title next year.

Conclusion

This entry might not make sense to everyone who reads it. I’ll have my supporters. But I’ll also have my naysayers who question why it’s on here in the first place. Perhaps I’m just frustrated that we’re having to watch the NBA Finals knowing we missed out on an opportunity.

Maybe I’m not happy that I take every loss personally and that there are other people dealing with bigger losses than me. I will admit I need to control my nerves and anxiety over the loss and just say it’s just a game. It’s time to move on. Y’all can say what you want about me and my thoughts and I won’t blame you if you don’t agree.

But I hope that the Houston Rockets get another shot to go to the NBA Finals and I hope I’m not wrong.  I was wrong when I thought we would win. But I would much rather be wrong in my hopes and beliefs of glory than right in someone else’s’ convincing of reality. In other words, I’m still hoping and waiting for the championship and I feel it’s coming.
