Houston Texans: Top 10 Draft Busts in Franchise History
By T.A. Mock
Before I get started with these two guys, I need y’all to recognize something that says a lot about these two players. In our image database, I could not find a single picture of them in a Texans uniform. It’s not like they are too old for that either. That should tell you how these guys panned out.
4. Brandon Harris, CB, 2011 2nd round pick
The Houston Texans needed a defensive infusion in 2011. You probably know who they drafted in the first round. They followed up the best defensive player in the game with Harris. Maybe it’s that stark comparison that sours Harris in my mind, but I don’t think it is.
A three year player at Miami, Harris was expected to come in and help solidify the secondary. However, he did pretty much the opposite. After the team invested a lot of draft capital in Harris, he gave them zero starts.
Harris created a void on the depth chart and a void on the field. He simply was not good. For his career, he only had eight total pass breakups and zero interceptions. The Texans cut him after three years.
However, he seems to have landed on his feet. He won the Grey Cup (championship game) with the Toronto Argonauts in the CFL in 2017.
3. Louis Nix III, 2014 3rd round pick
The Houston Texans stopped a draft day slide for the man known as Irish Chocolate. The massive nose tackle from Notre Dame appeared to be ready to come in and plug up the middle. He had the size and ability to come in and free up JJ Watt and Whitney Mercilus.
Instead, he rarely saw the field and quickly found himself in Bill O’Brien’s doghouse. After multiple injuries in practice, O’Brien publically challenged Nix to try to make it through a practice without getting hurt.
After missing all of 2014, Nix came back in shape the next offseason. He played in all four preseason games but failed to impress. Nix was cut following the preseason. He signed with the New York Giants and appeared in four games for them in 2015. He has been out of the league since.
