Houston Texans: 2018 draft report card looks sharp despite late start
By T.A. Mock
222nd Overall: Jermaine Kelly, DB San Jose State
Out of high school, Kelly committed to play at Washington. However, after a couple years he transferred out to San Jose State. Kelly will get the shot to compete to make the roster to contribute on special teams and provide secondary depth.
Kelly has good size standing just over 6-foot and right under 200 lbs. He pairs his size with decent speed, clocking as fast as 4.47 in the forty. Kelly then also follows the trend of getting bigger, faster, and stronger in the draft.
Kelly graded out at 93.7 in coverage in 2017 by PFF. Pretty solid, albeit against lesser competition. If he makes the squad he won’t get to show out that coverage too much. His size could parlay into some decent special teams play.
All in all, Kelly was thrilled to get selected. It’s always fun to see guys watch their dreams come true. Kelly may be viewed as a little underrated, but it’ll be interesting to see how he shows out in camp.
