Phase Three

Phase three is when things really start to heat up. More football and more action. It is split into two parts: Organized Team Activities (OTAs) and Minicamp.

OTAs

The Houston Texans will have three weeks to execute ten total OTAs. However, in the first two weeks the team can only have three a week. Fortunately, teams are also allowed a fourth non-OTA workout, but phase two rules apply. The final week of OTAs can have all four workouts being OTAs.

However, even though more football activities are allowed, no pads are permitted. Players can also wear helmets and protective knee and elbow pads. Teams can also operate 7 on 7 drills, 9 on 9, and even 11 on 11 drills. During these drills, however, there is not live contact permitted.

While OTAs are also not mandatory, it starts to get a little more concerning if a player misses these practices. The dates for OTAs are as follows:

Week Six: May 21 – 24      OTA 1-3

More from House of Houston

Week Seven: May 29 – 31      OTA 4-6

Week Eight: June 4 – 8      OTA 7-10

Minicamp

The same restrictions from OTAs apply to minicamp, but teams are awarded more freedom. During minicamp, teams are allowed activities for up to 10 hours a day. The team is allowed to conduct physicals on Monday, but aren’t allowed practices on Monday. Tuesday through Thursday the teams are allowed two practices totaling 3.5 hours a day. The second practice, however, is limited to only walk through segments. The rest of the day can consist of meetings and workouts (with phase one restrictions.

Minicamp is the only part of the off season that is mandatory. If players hold out and skip this portion teams are allowed to fine the players per day missed. The days for minicamp are as follows:

Week Nine: June 11 – 14

Next: Why Rich Dauer returning matters

I don’t know about you, but I am ecstatic for the 2018 season to get underway. Who knows, maybe 2018 the Houston Texans will follow the path of Houston Astros and Houston Rockets to the playoffs. Hopefully both the Texans and the Rockets can follow the Astros steps to a championship.

GO TEXANS!
