Houston Astros: Top 10 Wealthiest Contracts in Franchise History
By T.A. Mock
2. Roger Clemens, RHP
In 2004, the Astros lured the then six time Cy Young and one time MVP winner back to his hometown. Clemens became a member of the Houston Astros on a then-record setting deal, one year for $18 million. That already huge number inflates to $23 million in today’s money.
Clemens DID NOT disappoint. He rewarded the Astros’ investment with a Cy Young award that same year. The Astros then brought him back for two more years.
Bringing Clemens back to his hometown was one of the best moves in Houston Astros history, regardless of price. Ultimately, Clemens helped carry the Astros to their first World Series appearance in team history.
1. Jose Altuve, 2B
As stated earlier, Jose Altuve is now a Houston Astro until 2025. His extension starts in 2020 and is worth over $151 million over those five years. This deal confirms that Altuve is the face of the franchise and will be the face of the franchise.
Fresh off an MVP season, the Altuve hype is at an all time high. He, along with the rest of the team, are getting the recognition they deserve. If Altuve’s improvements year by year are any indication, this deal will age well. He’ll be 34 by the end of this deal.
