By T.A. Mock
4. Andy Pettitte, LHP
Andy Pettitte linked up with the Astros starting in the 2004 season. He signed a deal worth $31.5 million over three years. This $10.5 million a year translates to approximately $14.35 million today.
Pettitte collected 37 wins to 26 losses for the Astros with a 3.38 ERA and 1.23 WHIP. Pettitte also helped guide the Astros to their first world series appearance in 2006. Pettitte’s tenure with the Astros will always be remembered favorably because of this.
3. Carlos Lee, OF/1B
El Caballo signed with the Astros for the 2007 season. With Houston fresh off a World Series appearance, manager decided to capitalize and land a big fish, or horse in this case. The Astros signed Lee to a six year, $100 million deal. That $16.7 million a year inflates to $20.85 million a year in today’s money.
The Lee signing started off with a BANG. His first year with the club he played all 162 games slashing .303/.354/.528 with 32 homers and 119 RBIs. His production over the next two years dipped slightly, but he still managed 100+ RBIs. The wheels fell off the wagon fairly quickly after that. His production kept falling and the Astros cut bait with one year left on the deal.
