The Houston Texans rumors swirling around the candidacy of Bill O’Brien as their head coach continue to have legs.  The latest is a contradictory report indicating that his future with the team is uncertain.  What’s going on?

The Houston Texans typically don’t have coaching changes that often as there have been only three of them in their 15 season history.  Those guys are:  Dom Capers, Gary Kubiak and finally Bill O’Brien.  But speculation continues to ooze out in regard to the uncanny relationship between he and general manger Rick Smith.

Because of this, it has been understood that the two can’t work together and a split could be imminent.  Adam Schefter recently reported that the Houston Texans are looking to retain O’Brien but there are a few more things to work out with his contract.

However, according to report from the Houston Chronicle’s Aaron Wilson, things might not be so locked-in on O’Brien.  Wilson’s report contradicts what Schefter is alluding to and indicates that his future with the Houston Texans is far from uncertain.

Here’s what Wilson had to say:

This would certainly indicate that the Houston Texans brass is still mulling things over in regard to if he’s the right man for the job.  I honestly think he is the guy at this time because this team has been molded into the vision that he had instilled when he took over the reins some four years ago.

It’ll be interesting what the Texans decide after their meeting tomorrow.

If O’Brien were to get fired, he’d have a job lined up for him before he’d have a chance to check his messages on his cell phone, let alone clean out his desk.

Wilson alludes to that here:

For that reason only, it’s the reason why he should remain here.  He has VALUE and has churned

out winners from the players on this team.  Although this 4-11 season is far the realm of a winning one but we all know that they had a unprecedented wave of injuries that had took out a lot of our key stars such as Deshaun Watson, J.J. Watt and Whitney Mercilus.

However, I did write in piece yesterday that since he does have value, why not trade him if they plan to fire him?  Trading coaches is extremely rare these days but it’s still legal to do so.

Players such as Watson and Jadeveon Clowney have gone out of their way to express support for O’Brien and that could be enough to push his candidacy over the top.  But we’ll see about that.

Next: How Bill O'Brien could be traded, not fired

O’Brien has gone 31-32 in four seasons as head coach of the Texans.  He has earned three consecutive 9-7 winning seasons, two division titles and one playoff win.

Go Texans.
