Houston Texans: Why the team should sign Robert Griffin III now
Robert Griffin III recently was interviewed by Houston Texans columnist John McClain who is a highly respected NFL writer. RG3 had some interesting words to say and Rick Smith better be listening.
In a matter of a week, the Houston Texans quarterback situation turned from great to absolutely garbage because of Deshaun Watson‘s injury. Their performance this past Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams was the last straw for many Houston Texans fans with Tom Savage under center, he is literally playing himself out of the league forever.
The Houston Texans have become an absolute snooze fest because of Watson not being around with his ailments but one familiar name has recently said he’s open to signing with the Houston Texans.
Here’s what Robert Griffin III told the Chron’s John McClain, a fellow Baylor alumni:
"“I feel like I could help the team. I know a lot of their guys. I think I can do a lot of things they’ve been doing offensively. Texas is home, and I’ve always got a soft spot in my heart for Texas.”"
Griffin also said in the article that he’s ready to go as soon as his number is called, plus he said that he’s been working out and really putting in work in the film room.
A lot of sports fans know that Griffin was absolutely dominant in college where he won the Heisman back in 2011 at Baylor U. He was a headliner of the 2012 NFL Draft with Andrew Luck and was selected No. 2 overall. In his rookie year, he was electrifying to watch, then tore pretty much everything in his knee in the 24-14 2012 Wild Card Game loss to the Seattle Seahawks. After that crushing moment in his career, he hasn’t been the same.
In 2016, before getting injured, he passed for 886 yards with two touchdowns and the three interceptions for the Cleveland Browns.

RG3 is worth the workout and I would love the Texans to at least give him a shot to see if he still has it. It’s possible this small hiatus from football has helped him in a positive way. Especially if we can bring him in and let him start for the rest of the season AND he stays healthy. I’m so confident that he’ll pan out, I’d like to have sign him to a three-year deal and have him back up Watson.
There’s absolutely no way Savage is a Texan next season, hell he might even not have a job at the start
of training camp next season the way he’s playing. But God forbid if Deshaun goes down again, RG3 is a solid option as a backup since they are both mobile quarterbacks even though I think Watson will have far more success in the NFL than Griffin would have ever had.
Right now, the Texans are absolutely boring and I don’t think any one will disagree on that. But if RG3 comes in and starts you cannot tell me that him being here won’t be entertaining at all.

If Savage plays like garbage again against a VERY beatable opponent in the Arizona Cardinals this Sunday — especially with a great like Andre Johnson being honored — Smith should make a call to RG3 as soon as the game is over. Not only that but book him a flight, put him up in the new Marriott Marquis hotel in Downtown Houston and schedule him a workout first thing Monday.
That will ensure the Texans will make the most of the season and they will have a backup of the future.
