Chutes and Ladders? Or Is It Snakes and Ladders?

Remember your favorite board games as a kid growing up?  You might say Connect Four, Guess Who?, Candyland, and maybe Life. But one game that describes this series is Chutes and Ladders or Snakes and Ladders if you prefer reptiles.

The object of the game is simple. You spin a wheel, which lands on a number. You take your piece and go to the number. If that number has the bottom of the ladder attached to it, you go up to where the ladder stops. Sometimes, the ladder goes six spaces while other times, it goes up twenty spaces. But, if there’s the top of the chute or the head of the snake to the number, you slide back down to the bottom. Sometimes the chute or snake goes six spaces while other times, it goes down twenty spaces. You keep playing until somebody reaches 100 spaces.

That’s how it was during the series.

Our Chutes and Ladders

We started the game off moving slowly on spaces and then we hit a ladder from the game one win. Move on to game two, we keep going on hitting spaces and then, we get another ladder. But this one takes us further because we’re up 2-0.

So then we move along to game three and all of the sudden, we hit a snake or chute. No problem because that thing takes us down a few steps. But we’re still ahead of our opponent. Game four comes and we take a small ladder to get closer to the finish. But then, another chute or snake and we drop.

Now we got a problem. We’re tied up now. But we should at least spin a certain number to get a big ladder. Instead, we spin another number and it leads to another snake or chute. Meanwhile, our opponent got the number we needed and they’re closer to the line. It’s impossible, but we don’t give up.

Of course, it does help if you guarantee that clinching at home will be a reality. Sure enough, you spin again and you get a big ladder, which brings you closer to your opponent. From that point on, it’s just spinning spaces to reach the end. Before long, you are the one that reaches 100 and you are the winner.

Game over!
