Why we couldn’t accept losing this year

Think about it! A World Series between the Dodgers and Yankees would be a brilliant World Series. You have two teams on each coastlines going against each other. You have the top two US cities in population battling it out. It’s a historic rivalry between the Yankees and Dodgers. Marketing wise, it would make sense. Plus look at this.

  • 1947 World Series: Brooklyn Dodgers vs. New York Yankees.
  • 1977 World Series: Los Angeles Dodgers vs. New York Yankees
  • 2017 World Series: Los Angeles Dodgers vs. New York Yankees???

It seemed like destiny was favoring this series. There’s nothing wrong with a World Series between these two teams. But would it be the right one?

No!

The Yankees didn’t have a moral story other than an up-and-coming team that showed that they were contenders. They weren’t the ones from the city with a natural disaster. This team never had terrible seasons of 100 losses or more. Even if they do add another ring, it’s just another title added to their collection. Right A-Rod?

But the Houston Astros have that story. They are right now the biggest sports story in the world. Put aside political issues of kneeling during the national anthem. Ignore racial tensions in sports. Screw the idea of NBA Superteams or gender equality (not that I don’t think it shouldn’t be talked about.) But this team is helping a city overcome the struggles in recovery mode and they are four wins away from bringing an important championship to Houston.

We showed that despite our differences, that we can unite. The country is watching that right now and they will continue to watch as we play the Dodgers. You can’t afford that with the Yankees unless you rooted for them outside of New York.
