2. Assume the Position?!

13 Position Players: George Springer (CF), Josh Reddick (RF), Marwin Gonzalez (LF & Utility INF), Alex Bregman (3B), Carlos Correa (SS), Jose Altuve (2B), Yuli Gurriel (1B), Brian McCann (Primary Catcher), Carlos Beltran (DH, RHP), Evan Gattis (DH, LHP & Backup Catcher), Cameron Maybin (4th OF), Juan Centeno (3rd String Emergency Catcher), Derek Fisher (5th OF)

Of all the dilemmas surrounding the Houston Astros Post Season Roster, the offense is by far the biggest. Jake Marisnick had season ending thumb surgery just a few weeks ago. Because of this, it will free up space for one or both of Cameron Maybin and Derek Fisher to make it.

Marwin Gonzalez has had an All Star Caliber season, and will likely see time as the 3rd outfileder to George Springer and Josh Reddick. He can also spot any of the infielder as a utility guy. A role he knows best from doing all season long.

Designated Survivor

The biggest concern is the DH role. I recently wrote how there are better options at DH than Carlos Beltran, despite him being a lock to make the Houston Astros Post Season Roster.

However, with Evan Gattis producing time and time again when given the opportunity, there is absolutely ZERO chance he gets benched throughout the playoffs. The team may have made him a forgotten man in the regular season, but those plans will be foiled in the playoffs.

To allow for Gattis to serve as DH against left-handed pitching, Beltran will likely serve as DH against right-handed pitching, OR when Brian McCann isn’t behind the plate. Additionally, a third catcher will need to be kept on board. Juan Centeno will take the helm, if it does come to that.
