Having read an article on this website and seeing on the field, it’s clear that Carlos Beltran hasn’t had the best of seasons. But yet, should the Houston Astros win all the way, it would be a defining moment not just for him and Houston, but all of sports.

An Apology?

Before I began to talk about the Houston Astros Carlos Beltran, I want to apologize to the writer who wrote this article on his slump. I’ll admit, when I first looked at the title, the message given to me was that Beltran should not be on the October roster. Yes, I acted like a lazy bum who either didn’t read or refused to read. But I responded to the point where frustration took over.

So I ended up reading the article and I understood the point. The point brought up was not so much a reason why Beltran should not be on the roster. The point was that if the Houston Astros want to win at all, you have other options in the DH spot. So again, I do want to apologize. I hate how people overreact to small situations that are causing chaos in the world right now. In truth, we’re all like that and we need to step back from time to time.

That being said, let me give you the ultimate reason why I felt the way I did.

The Background

When we first signed Beltran in the off season, I knew we wouldn’t be getting the same player that was our best player in 2004. It wasn’t going to be the Carlos Beltran who robbed a Michael Young homer and played drama fit with it.

We wouldn’t see an eight-homer postseason guy in the playoffs.

More from House of Houston

We wouldn’t see the man who took a contract with the New York Mets in 2005 and missed out on a World Series chance.

Then again, we might have won had he been with us. No offense Willy Taveras.

The Reason

So why was I bothered by that? The reason I give may sound silly. After all, some Cleveland fans think I’m crazy anyways. But to be honest, I’d rather be crazy and be bold knowing I could fail then get hit with a wrecking ball on a dream season with a 22-game winning streak.

Let’s look at it this way. You’ve played an entire career achieving as many accolades as you can. You’re the 1998 Rookie of the Year. You’ve also built up a hall of fame resume that might take a few years to induct you. And you’ve given your heart and soul to the game for the past twenty seasons. But what’s left for you?

A championship.

Yes, the one thing that separates you from everything else is a championship. You want to win so badly that you will join a title contender. Despite everything that happened in the past, the Houston Astros forgave you.

Now let’s say that in your last professional game, you do get that championship and you do ride off into the sunset. That would be a perfect way to go out.

You don’t need to be a star because you have other stars on the team. And this team is built to win for at least a decade and win now.

That’s the way I felt. Sure I know Beltran is slumping, but we’re we asking him to be something he no longer is in the moment. He’s already achieved so much that all we ask for him is to be a veteran leader.

Going out on top and riding into the sunset

Here are a few athletes that went out on top:

Jerome Bettis

Ray Lewis

John Elway

Peyton Manning

Michael Strahan

David Robinson

Lanny McDonald

David Ross

Ray Bourque

So I’m sure y’all might understand what my mind is saying? Will Carlos Beltran become a member of this club? I don’t know! I sure hope he does. Either way, I do think he’ll retire after this year and go down as a legendary player.

Next: THREE options that are better than Carlos Beltran now

Now what do I think about it? Wouldn’t it be great if all of these former athletes went on a cattle drive together? Retired athletes willing to do something cool for one final memory together.

With being said, enjoy this opening scene of Lonesome Dove, a popular Western movie:

Here’s to hoping that Beltran goes out on top.  He has an amazing cast to star with so the chances are great.
