The Houston Texans have been quite deft with their roster moves and they were able to pluck a wide receiver that could provide some solid help to an ailing unit.

The Houston Texans have completed their roster cuts and have set their practice squad.  But among all of those moves that were made, a key cut had to be undertaken in order to improve this roster.  It’s always tough to cut players, especially the beloved ones that have been here awhile and have made their mark.  But the decision was made and we now have new wide receiver.

Yes, the Houston Texans have decided to sign WR Andy Jones after releasing bruising running back Akeem Hunt.  Hunt had appeared with the franchise for the past two seasons and they were filled with encouraging, hard-nosed plays that he made to help the team win.  There is talk of the team wanting to bring back into the fold but the limitations that team has, those plans will have to be on hold for the time being.

But back to Jones.  The 6’1,” 220-pound, speedy wide receiver was claimed off waivers from the Dallas Cowboys after flashing a bit in camp but not enough to make their roster.   He did spend significant time on the practice squad last season with the Cowboys as well.

The competition was extremely tough as he was going up against Brice Butler, Noah Brown and Ryan Switzer.  Ultimately, those guys won the battle and that’s why Jones is here.

The positive aspects of Jones are that he can run the 40-yard dash in 4.4 seconds, he has a 41.5″ vertical leap, earned a 6.97 time in the cone drill and is quite familiar with all three positions of wide receiver on the field.  When you become a member of the Houston Texans, being versatile is paramount and it will certainly keep you employed for a long time.

Jones was a 2016 undrafted free agent out of Jacksonville U, an extremely small school with a football program.  It’s important to note that he attended the Florida Gators pro day putting up similar numbers as I mentioned above.  This certainly made him a blip on the radar and he made himself a pathway to the NFL with the work that he had put in.

He seems to be somewhat raw but Bill O’Brien and John Perry will certainly work to smooth those edges to see if he can make an impact — hopefully quickly — for this football team.

Jones, who saw action in all four of the Cowboys preseason games, caught seven balls for 61 yards — 8.7 yards per catch — that also included two starts.

Jones also had 144 receptions for 2,120 yards along with 17 touchdowns in his career with Jacksonville.

Go Texans.
