Houston Texans: Predicting the 2017 53-Man Roster by Position
Running Backs
Running backs (4) — Lamar Miller, D’Onta Foreman, Alfred Blue and Tyler Ervin
Lamar Miller hasn’t been used that much in the preseason but looks good to go as he has plenty of reinforcements to help take the rushing load off of him. Foreman has been the most exciting aspect of camp so far with just the level of strength and finesse that he provides to the position.
Blue has had a solid camp as well, making plays on the ground with a touchdown as well as on special teams, ensuring that his versatility is what will keep him a Texan. Ervin has flashed quite a bit through the preseason being able to secure the football — his biggest problem last season — and racking up yards with pride.
Do we really need Jay Prosch? The fullback position is a dying breed but Jay is one of the best at it. We have a ton of guys that can efficiently do the job that he does so there’s not a specific need. The aforementioned backs can get the short yards that we need, which is primarily what he’s used for. However, I doubt that we’d cut him since he has been with O’Brien since Day 1.
CUTS: Akeem Hunt, Dare Ogunbowale, Jay Prosch, Jordan Todman
Wide Receivers
Wide receivers (6) — DeAndre Hopkins, Will Fuller, Braxton Miller, Jaelen Strong, Bruce Ellington and Wendall Williams
We’ve had a ton of injuries to our guys at this position so preserving them throughout the preseason is paramount. Hopkins will certainly be on point as the rapport between he and Savage is right where it needs to be thus far. Fuller will likely be out until the midpoint of the season with his injury to the collarbone.
So Miller, Strong and Ellington will be called upon to fill the void and if they stay healthy, they’ll do just fine on that front. We’ve only had Ellington for about three weeks off the waiver wire but he has quickly picked up the schemes, showing he’s ready to play. I’m picking Williams to make this team because of his speed, versatility on special teams and his can-do spirit. All in all, Wendall is just a guy you want to root for!
