The Houston Texans have only been to the divisional round of the AFC playoffs three times in franchise history. Two out of those three times it was at the hands of the New England Patriots.

Perhaps this is why the Houston Texans seem to constantly poach from New England’s former players and coaching staff. From head coach Bill O’Brien to assistant head coach Romeo Crennel to defensive coordinator Mike Vrabel and now soon to be hall of fame wide receiver Wes Welker.

Any knowledge of an opponent from former players and coaches alike in any and all facets of the game can’t hurt getting over that hump of beating said team that is perennially in the conversation for Super Bowl contender.

While the Texans defense is stout, the quarterback situation is uncertain. Not in terms of who the starter will be anymore, but how the starter will perform. One way to help a quarterback who may not have the most talent in the world is to surround him with talented receivers.

More from House of Houston

There’s no questioning the athleticism of the Texans receiving corps with Deandre Hopkins and Will Fuller with a solid back up crew of Jaelen Strong, Braxton Miller and the emerging talent of Bruce Ellington.

Wes Welker never had the athleticism of these aforementioned players. He had to rely on toughness and intelligence to find ways to play in the NFL without that bigger football frame. Quite possibly the best slot receiver of all time, he can teach these guys tricks on getting open that should be easier for players with more athletic ability than Welker ever had to utilize.

Former teammate Julian Edelman puts Welker’s work ethic and personality best.

"Wes is such a smart, intelligent football player. He played a lot of years. He’s a grinder, meaning he earned everything he got… He had to have a long journey to being ultimately a revolutionary player who basically created a position."

This is the guy who is now in charge of players who have more physical gifts than anything ever bestowed upon Welker. The knowledge of the game that Welker can impart upon our young wide outs can have a very big impact that leads to helping an inexperienced quarterbacking corps out by proxy.

The Texans have made a lot of great moves in terms of coaching hires over the past few years. Wes Welker is a big addition to that coaching staff and could be a big difference maker in improving the game play of our burgeoning young stars on the edges of the field.
