2014 – When Dwight was nice

As Rockets fans, we were excited that Dwight Howard was coming to Houston. We instantly believed in championships right away. We were sure that it was going to be our time to win. But as we can remember, we lost to the Portland Trailblazers in a heartbreaking fashion. A three-pointer by Damian Lillard at the buzzer killed the Rockets.

But that’s all we’re going to say as Lillard’s shot does not go and Houston wins in seven in our experiment. In the semifinals, we play our neighbors out west in the Spurs. We dominated them during the regular season. Does that trend continue in the postseason?

2014 Western Conference Semifinals – Houston Rockets vs. San Antonio Spurs

Game 1 in San Antonio: Spurs 111-89 (1-0 SAS)

Game 2 in San Antonio: Spurs 107-105 (2-0 SAS)

Game 3 in Houston: Rockets 111-98 (2-1 SAS)

Game 4 in Houston: Rockets 110-76 (2-2)

Game 5 in San Antonio: Rockets 92-85 (3-2 HOU)

Game 6 in Houston: Spurs 109-95 (3-3)

Game 7 in San Antonio: Rockets 105-99 (4-3 HOU)

Houston Rockets win series 4-3.

A hard fought seven-game series ends well for Houston. Despite losing the first two games, the Rockets are able to rally and take the next three games before winning in seven. This hurts the Spurs who have to live with losing a heartbreaking seven-game final to the Miami Heat.

Meanwhile, Houston goes to Oklahoma City for a playoff rematch with Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, and the Thunder. It’s Durant/Westbrook vs. James Harden. How does this series end?

2014 Western Conference Finals – Houston Rockets vs. Oklahoma City Thunder

Game 1 in Oklahoma City: Thunder 107-106 (1-0 OKC)

Game 2 in Oklahoma City: Thunder 105-101 (2-0 OKC)

Game 3 in Houston: Rockets 120-96 (2-1 OKC)

Game 4 in Houston: Rockets 104-95 (2-2)

Game 5 in Oklahoma City: Rockets 103-94 (3-2 HOU)

Game 6 in Houston: Rockets 112-84 (4-2 HOU)

Houston Rockets win series 4-2.

The first two games were pretty tight. Game one ends when KD beats the Rockets on a shot while Westbrook plays well down the stretch in game two. Even down 2-0, the Rockets are confident and James Harden lights the Thunder for 40 points in game three. After Howard pours in 23 in game four to even the series, Houston is able to win game five in Oklahoma City recapturing the lead.

More from House of Houston

Just like the Spurs series, the Rockets won three straight after losing the first two. This time, they take advantage of their home court and defeat the Thunder with ease. Their reward is a trip to Miami against the two-time defending champion Heat with LeBron, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh. Can the Rockets do what the Spurs did to Miami in 2014?

2014 NBA Finals: Houston Rockets vs. Miami Heat

Game 1 in Miami: Heat 104-94 (1-0 MIA)

Game 2 in Miami: Rockets 113-107 (1-1)

Game 3 in Houston: Rockets 103-100 (2-1 HOU)

Game 4 in Houston: Rockets 104-100 (3-1 HOU)

Game 5 in Miami: Heat 112-101 (3-2 HOU)

Game 6 in Houston: Rockets 90-83 (4-2 HOU)

Houston Rockets win series 4-2

Another championship for Houston and the dream is real. Houston puts an end to Miami’s reign and adds another banner to the rafters. Quite the contrary, the Rockets could’ve won a championship despite being the four seed in the western conference.

So in six seasons, Houston would’ve won three titles giving them five. That would certainly put us as an elite franchise with the Spurs, and Bulls. But what about the last year? What about the last season of the experiment? Let’s find out as we look to go back-to-back in 2015.
