It’s been 22 years since the Houston Rockets last won a championship.

Sure, every other franchise has had to endure a long title drought of this magnitude. But with the Rockets, there have been chances to add more championships.

If y’all know me, you would probably assume I’m a prophet when I say a championship is coming. I don’t predict the future and I’m certainly not a crazy fan. When I say Houston will win another title soon, I really mean it.

That being said, it’s ok to recall opportunities to win championships. We’ve had some good teams that could’ve brought us a title in Houston. But needless to say, there were better teams. We can’t control what would’ve happened had we taken advantage of the opportunities.

It hurts to think that we came so close during the years. But the question that needs to be asked is how many championships could we have won during the twenty-two seasons?

I think a good team would average at least three during twenty-two seasons. The Spurs won five in eighteen seasons. The Los Angeles Lakers won eight from 1980-2002. The Boston Celtics are almost guaranteed to win a title every two decades at least.

But what about the Rockets? They’re nothing like the trio of teams in terms of popularity. But how good could they have been to make Houston a sports city? That’s the question I asked myself.

Experiment Time

Two weeks ago, I wrote about the alternate 2011 season with the Houston Texans and Matt Schaub. I used the website WhatifSports.com to help me with my research. So I figured why not go back to the source and find out ourselves? Let’s see if Houston could’ve gotten more titles added to their resume.

I’ve looked back on the previous twenty-two seasons and concluded that at least seven seasons had Houston with a legitimate chance at winning the championship. Much like the Texans experiment, we’re going to try and alternate history. In each of the seasons, we’re going to start in the series the Rockets were eliminated and go from there when they win. We’ll see how far they can go?

Keep in mind, the results of this experiment do not correlate to the actual event that would’ve  happened. Also, keep in mind that I did not in any way shape or form try to make the results favorable.

So without further or due, we begin with the season that ended a dynasty in Houston.
