The “Big Game” Pitfall

We all have our debate on the greatest college football game ever. But I think for most of us, the 2006 Rose Bowl between #1 USC and #2 Texas has been and will remain the best game ever. This game saw Vince Young carry the Longhorns to the dethroning of the two-time champion Trojans 41-38. The stats were there. 467 total yards, three rushing touchdowns including the famous 4th and 5 play. Vince Young killed the Trojans. But sadly, this game also was the peak of Young’s career.

Sure he was drafted third and would have a rookie of the year season. But what else did Young do? Aside from one 99-yard drive against Matt Leinart (0-2 all-time vs. Young), he really did nothing to help his cause.

Matt Leinart

Leinart also became a victim of that game. Despite two national titles at USC, he never developed as a pro player. Sadly, he is best remembered for being the quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals in a game against the Chicago Bears in 2006. No worries for he wasn’t the story of the game.

Tim Tebow

The same is said for Tim Tebow. He had a great Heisman Trophy season and won a national championship for Florida in 2008. Tebow had one brilliant NFL season in 2011, but since has become a pro baseball star.

Jameis Winston

Jameis Winston was a freshman quarterback who led Florida State to the title with a 34-31 win against Auburn. He is still working on being an elite quarterback with Tampa Bay.

Deshaun Watson?

All of these guys did play tremendous games in college. But by the time they got drafted in the pros, most of their energy and football talent was either gone or leaking out.

While Watson does have experience winning big games, it’s no guarantee he’ll be a winner in Houston. Yes, he defeated Alabama last season. But Alabama is nowhere near the same level as 31 NFL teams. The Cleveland Browns might have lost in an upset had they played play the Crimson Tide.

The game is faster and players have more experience. So Watson will have to be on his A++ game every single time he touches the ball.
