Houston Texans: Five Reasons why Deshaun Watson could be great or a bust
Being obsessed with the “Wow” factor
Now we all know how this ended up. So I think we can all ask ourselves this question. WHAT WERE WE THINKING?
Maybe there was something about his 5-2 record as a Broncos starter that caught our eyes. Perhaps there was something about his victory over the Patriots that captured our hearts in hoping we could beat New England. Guess we thought being mentored by Peyton Manning helps as well. So why not pay the man $72 million? He deserves it and we all reluctantly agree.
We were wrong! When I say we, I mean all of us from players and coaches to fans. Even after a 4-0 preseason, we believed it was our year. Even after his incredible comeback vs. the Colts, he still fooled us. Brock Osweiler was a severe case of the quarterback tease.
What is a quarterback tease? It maybe similar to a draft bust or a one year wonder. But a quarterback tease is when a quarterback shows signs of promise only to go on the decline. With Osweiler, we had that case. It’s the same cases as Tim Tebow, Andy Dalton, and Mr. Butt Fumble himself.
In order for a quarterback to show his greatness, he cannot have games where he shows promise and games where he struggles. He must be consistent for as long as he can in one area. That’s where Watson must prove himself. If he’s on the promise side for long, he’s a good quarterback. Should he be on the struggling side, he’s a bust sadly. There is no room for the middle.
