After three seasons of enduring quarterback troubles, the Houston Texans finally have found their match in Deshaun Watson.

Or so they think. With rave reviews already in the Houston Texans training camp, one has to wonder if this is the sign of the next great quarterback or the next great bust.

The past few seasons for the Houston Texans have been rides of waves. Sure they went 9-7 for three straight years and made the playoffs twice. Sure, they have the best defensive player and one who might be coming into a zone. But let’s be clear, the Houston Texans were a one-piece away team from the Super Bowl. It came at quarterback.

So while the number of quarterbacks used to make the playoffs is glaring and respectful to a degree, it does show that Houston had trouble finding a quarterback. David Carr wasn’t good because of his O-Line. Matt Schaub was brilliant until a forgetful 2013 season. Ryan Fitzpatrick, Brian Hoyer, Ryan Mallett, TJ Yates, Brandon Weeden, Tom Savage, Case Keenum, and COUGH COUGH Brock Osweiler all had moments to either remember or forget.

It was clear that going into the draft that the Houston Texans were gunning for a quarterback. The question was who? Well, what happened on Draft Day was a sign of a brilliant piece of work by Rick Smith or a desperation move since two big name QBs were taken. Either way, Deshaun Watson is now on the staff.

Who’s talking about DeShaun?

So far, it’s becoming clear that Watson has seemed to earn praise from head coach Bill O’Brien, who has had trouble yearning for a winning quarterback.

"Deshaun is ahead of any rookie quarterback I’ve ever been around."

Then you have his college coach Dabo Swinney saying that passing on Watson was like passing on Michael Jordan. Even more so, well-respected beat-writer John McClain compared Watson to Warren Moon after watching him at training camp.

Thoughts of Houston Texans’ fans

So I get the feeling we know where this is going. Deshaun Watson will be the starting quarterback on opening day. He’ll have a great rookie season and lead the Houston Texans to the playoffs. At some point, he’ll lead the Houston Texans to the Super Bowl and have a tremendous career.

What’s my feeling on this matter? Slow down pal! We might be getting ahead of ourselves here. There’s a lot of speculation that should not be applied to a rookie. So we know that Watson is having a good training camp from his coaches. But let’s be real! Training camp is nothing compared to an NFL game, let alone a preseason game.

I think we need to consider factors that make the quarterback position the toughest in the game of football. We all could care about the quarterback ratings, arms, touchdowns to interceptions ratio. But we also might need to establish other factors too. We have to look at why we should not get too excited about Watson as a quarterback.
