Houston Astros Rumors: Why a trade for Lance Lynn makes sense
The Houston Astros have the end zone in sight and with the latest rumor, the guy that they want will push them past the goal line.
With football references aside, the Houston Astros are so close to the non-waiver deadline of July 31 at 3 p.m. CDT, they could taste it. There have been rumors all over the map but for the past couple of days, things have been quiet on their front. But we know that the phone lines have been burning up in regard to our team making a deal that’s a win-win for not only the team but for the fans as well.
We’ve had the Houston Astros connected to guys like Sonny Gray, Yu Darvish, Justin Wilson, Julio Teheran, Zach Britton and Jacob deGrom among many others. But the latest rumor indicates that the team is willing to make a trade partner out of a team that would certainly would be considered a foe on the battlefield. Just who are they looking at?
According to MLB Insider Jon Morosi, the Houston Astros have expressed interest in pitcher Lance Lynn:
He also added this tidbit as well:
So this rumor has been confirmed and it definitely indicates that the franchise has shifted their strategy of looking primarily for a bullpen guy to a starter that could fill out the rotation. There’s plenty of bad blood between both the Astros and the St. Louis Cardinals amid the scandal heard ’round the world with one of their top officials hacking into the team’s scouting system. But apparently from Morosi’s thoughts, the teams do feel comfortable making a deal with each other.
That’s actually good to know because Lynn is one of those guys any team would love to have on their roster. And besides, we could use his four-seam fastball and sinker that sits in the low 90s to begin with. Lynn missed all of 2016 after undergoing Tommy John surgery on his right elbow but in his first campaign since having the common procedure done, his numbers are right where they need to be.
They’re going to want Derek Fisher, Francis Martes, Kyle Tucker and Forrest Whitley. Is it worth trading one or two of those guys for Lynn? Absolutely and I’d feel more comfortable trading to them than to a division rival like the Texas Rangers when the team was rumored to be interested in Yu Darvish.
His contract is expiring after this season as he’ll be a free agent in 2018. He’ll earn $7.5 million in 2017 which makes a deal for him even more appealing. Could he be a rental? Possibly so but if we win a World Series because of Lynn, it won’t matter whatsoever.
This team has a chance of a lifetime that not many have when they don’t spend excessive amounts of money and a move has be made to ensure we have the resources available to win to have a successful playoff win, with hopes pinned on winning the World Series. We’ll have to see how this pans out but I’m definitely on board with this proposal.
