#1 Houston was first in almost every category

I think every Houstonian could argue that from 1962-2009, the Houston Astros were by far the better and more recognizable team. This may be far-fetched to say, but the Houston Astros got as much recognition as the Dallas Cowboys. Call me crazy when I say this, but the truth was, people knew about the Houston Astros more so than the Rangers. The only difference was the Astros were in the National League and the Rangers were in the American League.

So why did I say the Astros were recognized as the dominant team in Texas before the Rangers? It’s because the Astros were first in almost every category. We were the first team to arrive in Texas. We were the first team to win a game. Houston was the first team to win a division and reach the postseason. The Astros were the first team to win a postseason game. And more importantly, we were the first team to make the World Series.

Of course, the only things Rangers fans can hold true to their heart is being first to have a Home Run Derby winner in Juan Gonzalez and first to have a Hall of Famer representing them in Nolan Ryan. They were also the first team to win a World Series game.

The only thing that remains to be touched by either one is the title of the first team to win a World Series. While I won’t go as far as to say that will be the Astros anytime soon even though I would love the achievement, it’s still anyone’s game.
