The Houston Astros had quite a scare with one of their top prospects taking a nasty shot to the face, causing him to be carted off the field.

I’m talking about Colin Moran who is filling in at third base for the Houston Astros while Carlos Correa heals from his thumb injury.  As you know, Alex Bregman moved over to shortstop — his natural position — and will likely see the bulk of the time there while Correa is out.  It’s terrific that our No. 23 prospect is getting an opportunity to showcase his skills.

Moran swung at a pitch from Darren O’Day to which the ball tipped off the bat upward to the left side of his face, causing him to tumble into the dirt, grimacing in pain.  Because of this, a cart was sent out for Moran to be later examined at a local hospital.  He had a thorough evaluation the latest in regard to his injury has now been released to the public.

The Chron’s Jake Kaplan reports:

This seems as a minor setback for Moran as he’ll be good to go in just a little over a week barring any other flare ups with this injury.  In addition, Kaplan also mentioned that it’s possible that Moran may need surgery to repair the damage of the fracture.  He’s also suffering from a concussion as a result of the hit as well.  To further illustrate the nature of injury from the foul tip,

here’s video from WBAL’s Pete Gilbert:

The Houston Astros have already called up Tyler White to replace him while he’s out.  His slash line is .299/.371/.517 with 19 home runs and 69 ribbies this season with the Fresno Grizzlies.  I don’t think this will have much effect in our production as the team is one of the best in baseball with tremendous depth in just about every area.  White will m

Through the course of the season, things like this happen which certainly challenges the wits of the manager.  So far, A.J. Hinch has done tremendously well managing the bullpen as well as the lineup to get the absolute most production that he can to win baseball games.  His formula has proven to be a successful one and he’s certainly going to be running away with the AL Manager of the Year Award.

Moran, 24, is hitting .500 with two RBIs, one homer and a 1.833 OPS through six at-bats in two games so far.  Get well soon Colin.
