Houston Astros: Chris Devenski Named American League All Star
By Dan Shedd
Houston Astros pitcher Chris Devenski was named an American League All Star earlier today.
He is one of six players who will replace those who are injured or chose not to participate in the Midsummer Classic in Miami Tuesday July 11, which will be televised on Fox starting at 6:30 p.m. CDT.
Chris Devenski joins fellow Houston Astros teammates Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa, George Springer, along with fellow pitchers Lance McCullers and Dallas Keuchel, who will not participate due to an injury.
The seven Houston Astros All Star selections are the most in team history. The previous record was 5 players when the Astros were in the National League in 1994. The players selected were Craig Biggio, Jeff Bagwell, Doug Drabek, Ken Caminiti and John Hudek.
The 26 year old Chris Devenski has been one of the reasons the Astros pitching staff has been so good this year. He is sporting a 6-3 record, a 2.09 ERA with 72 strikeouts in 34 games.
What makes Devenski so good? It’s not just his array of pitches, as described by PitcherList.com, but it’s also his mindset and preparation for starts.

Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports profiled Devenski earlier this year in May, calling him the “hottest pitcher on the planet”, earning high praise from fellow teammates and General Manager Jeff Luhnow.
Nicknamed “The Dragon,” from his minor league days, for his work ethic and tenacity, the Houston Astros allowed fans to show their appreciation for Devenski by hosting a “Game of Thrones Night” where the fans were given the opportunity to own a GOT Dragon bobblehead among other Game of Thrones themed activities and experiences on June 28th.
I went to that game with my brother and while I am not a Game of Thrones fan, I certainly enjoyed seeing fans with their bobblehead supporting Chris Devenski. He certainly deserves all the recognition he gets. Being named an All Star is probably the greatest recognition you can get besides being named a World Series Champion and Hall of Famer.
