Governor Abbott Jinx and the Bad Hop – 2015 ALDS

There’s so much in this series that happened. But let’s just cut to the moment that matters. The moment that we all remember. That sits with us and stings.

Up two games to one in the 2015 ALDS, the Astros were in a tight game four matchup with the Kansas City Royals. Only up 3-2 in the top of the seventh, the Astros had just gotten a VERY close call on an attempted steal at third base by Terrence Gore overturned. Still watching it to this day it’s hard to call him out or safe as it is Luis Valbuena‘s wrist that’s touching him for that tenth of a second Gore pops off the base.

Then bottom of the seventh. A two run Carlos Correa bomb. Crowd goes nuts. As the crowd is finally settling in after that, boom! A Colby Rasmus Colby-Jack to right. making the score 6-2 in our favor going into the top of the eighth.

Then. The tweet.

Governor Abbott prematurely congratulates the Astros on getting to the ALCS. And all hell broke loose.

The Royals strung together hit after hit after hit. Constantly putting the Astros bullpen under duress to just get out of the inning with the lead. After Will Harris loaded the bases, giving up a run in the process without recording a single out, Tony Sipp comes on to try and stop the hurt. But he gives up a single that makes it a 6-4 Astros lead with bases loaded and nobody out. Gulp.

But then Sipp gets a double play ball to short that will score a run but hey, a 6-5 lead with two outs is better than OH NO! The ball takes a funny hop by Correa and the rally continues.

The Royals would go on to win the game, the series and the championship leaving Astros fans wondering “What would have happened if we had turned two there?”  We had the eventual champions on the ropes, but couldn’t finish them off.

If you’d like vengeance against Governor Abbott by the way, just tweet “Congrats on your re-election!” anytime before the 2018 mid-terms.
