We’re almost at the end of March and the Houston Texans have made very little waves in the free agency bonanza that has taken place over the past couple of weeks.

Us fans have just sat here, wondering what the heck’s going on up on Kirby Drive in general manager Rick Smith’s office.

I knew they were at work but not necessarily dominating the headlines in terms of their inactivity after the free agency date had passed.

Where they standing pat, waiting for how the Tony Romo situation would pan out?

That would be foolish because you know Jerry Jones is going to milk every bit of our desperation for a reliable, efficient quarterback under center.

He knows that’s what the Texans need so he’ll let this period of waiting draw out until June when they’ll have to make a decision one way or another to retain him on the roster.

With Romo due $24.7 million for 2017, I’m positive the Dallas Cowboys won’t keep that kind a salary on the roster when the current Rookie of the Year, Dak Prescott, has proven he belongs in this league as a starter.

Will the Texans wait?

I honestly think they have no choice, it’s either do that, make a run for Jay Cutler or bring back Tom Savage under center.

At this point, any of those options are viable, I’m just glad the Brock Osweiler isn’t under center next season as it would’ve been such a let-down to see him even on the bench.

But why have the Texans stood pat so far?

According to the Houston Chronicle’s Aaron Wilson, the Texans stand to receive as much four compensatory picks for 2018 as a result of the multitude of free agents leaving for different pastures, most within the division.

Wilson writes that the Texans could receive as high as another 2018 third-round pick with A.J. Bouye signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars a couple of weeks ago.

The Texans lost their 2018 2nd-rounder in the Osweiler trade but those picks could become extremely valuable assets when the time comes to pass.

It’s not a bad move by Smith to do this as he’s is thinking ahead but still concerned about the now.

The Texans also lost Quintin Demps, John Simon, Oday Aboushi and Don Jones to the Chicago Bears, Indianapolis Colts, Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers respectively.

I hope Smith knows what he’s doing but I actually have admit that I trust him with what he’s doing.

The man was able to get Osweiler out of here so that definitely deserves major cred as we thought it was unfathomable.

But with the Texans owning all other 2018 picks outside of the 2nd-rounder, they could have up to 10 picks to work with encompass for whatever deals that need to be made.

Are they showing the Cowboys that they’re ready to talk turkey for Romo?

It’s possible — but who knows?

But in due time, we’re going to find out why the Texans are stockpiling draft picks and the end game will be evident.

It’s all a matter of when — let’s hope for sooner than later.

Go Texans.
