The clock is ticking on the Houston Texans as we’re a little over a month away from the NFL Draft.

This year, there’s a lot of anticipation as far as what the Houston Texans plan to do in the three-day affair.

There are tons of needs that this team should fill as this draft has a plethora of talent foaming at the mouth to make their mark in the league.

We just hope that Rick Smith can strike it big in this year’s draft just as he did in last year’s.

As much heat as we give Smith, his draft picks as of late have been more hits than misses, especially in the later rounds.

Christian Covington, D.J. Reader are two perfect examples of players making the best of their opportunities that have been given to them.

But as with every draft, we all wonder if the Houston Texans will invest a pick in quarterback early in the draft.

With the recent overtures of Bob McNair, it’s highly likely that we will, considering the problems we continue to have with production at the position.

Not only that, but it’s needed as it’s the only piece that’s truly lacking and it continues to stymie our progress in marching toward the ultimate goal of winning a Super Bowl.

But here’s a guy I think the Texans need to strongly consider early.

DeShaun Watson will be gone and so will Patrick Mahomes II so the next best thing is…

Mitch Trubisky!

Yes, the 6’2,” 222-pound quarterback out the University of North Carolina is one the Texans need consider for the future.

He’s the total package with a heck of arm, who can throw the ball accurately and can effectively slither his way out of tough situations.

But you don’t have to take my word for it, here’s what some of the experts had to say.

SportsTalk 790’s and NFL.com writer Lance Zierlein:

"“Adequate height with good muscular definition. Built to withstand physical challenges of the position. Calm field general. Very good pocket mobility. Can slide around circumference of the pocket without having to drop his eyes from their task. When he leaves the pocket, looks to challenge with his arm before defaulting to his feet. Always in ready-to-rip throwing posture. Delivery is crisp and efficient.”"

That’s enough said, he’s everything Brock Osweiler wasn’t and what Tom Savage should be once he reaches his full potential.

But to be fair, we haven’t seen enough of Savage to make a fair assessment but who knows if he’ll ever get that opportunity again.

Zierlein also pointed out his weaknesses:

"“Needs better drive accuracy between the hashes. Has a tendency to leave throws in hip pocket of moving targets. Inconsistent deep ball touch. Has touchdown opportunities he babies and invites defenders time to recover. Not always pocket aware. Hyper-focuses on shifting parts down the field and can be late to feel pressure collapsing the edges.”"

And?!?  These are things that Bill O’Brien and Sean Ryan can teach the rookie to get better at.

Zierlein also mentions that the majority of his plays were out of the shotgun with the Tar Heels, with heavy usage of the spread offense.

He led the Tar Heels to an 8-5 record with a 4-4 record against the AP Top 25 talent, culminating with a 25-23 loss in the Sun Bowl to Stanford back Dec. 30.

There will be learning curve for Mitch because O’Brien quarterbacks must stay in the pocket, be patient and let things materialize behind the line of scrimmage.

However, our offensive line was decent — not great — and a lot the NFL’s greatest talents were able to punch through and get to Osweiler quite easily.

So that unit needs to be repaired along with the addition of a quarterback.

In addition, here’s what Charlie Campbell of WalterFootball.com had to say:

"“Trubisky has more of a second-round-caliber skill set, but that doesn’t preclude teams from reaching on him in the first round. Teams have had second-day grades on many quarterbacks who ended up going as top-32 picks. Sources from three different teams told me they graded Trubisky in Round 2, but he received a first-round estimation from the NFL Draft Advisory Board. One playoff general manager told WalterFootball.com that they rate Trubisky the highest because he has the tools to play with accuracy and athleticism. Most team sources project Trubisky to go high in the first round.”"

Trubisky had his Pro Day this afternoon and Campbell writes that he had good arm strength but struggled with accuracy.

I don’t find that too alarming and as I reiterated before, that’s definitely something coaching can fix.

Jeff Risdon of the USA TODAY confirmed that the Texans were in attendance of Trubisky’s Pro Day as well.

So will the Texans “REACH” and “PULL” the trigger?

We’ll have to see — I certainly hope so!

Trubisky passed for 3,748 yards with 30 touchdowns to six interceptions with 308 rushing yards to his credit through 13 games in 2016, his junior season.

Go Texans.
