Houston Texans Report: Ryan Griffin Re-Signs; Agrees To A Three-Year Deal
It’s Day 3 of NFL Free Agency for the Houston Texans and it looked like nothing but silence was going to emanate from Kirby Drive.
It’s Day 3 of NFL Free Agency for the Houston Texans and it looked like nothing but silence was going to emanate from Kirby Drive.
Here’s a recap of the guys that we’ve lost to free agency thus far:
A.J. Bouye was the first of the casualties signing a five-year, $65 million deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
John Simon, a linebacker that had improved his game tremendously over time and had become a reliable piece, signed a three-year, $17 million deal with the Indianapolis Colts.
Safety Quintin Demps also was able to land a deal with the Chicago Bears for three-years, $13.5 million with $5 million guaranteed in the first season. Demps had a career-high six interceptions for 2016.
Even safety-special teams specialist Don Jones, who was signed by the Texans later in the 2016 season, bolted for the San Francisco 49ers and agreed to a two-year deal.
But at least there’s news of the Houston Texans retaining some of their own in tight end Ryan Griffin.
Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports:
I knew Griffin was going to have offers as the Detroit Lions had interest in the budding tight end but ultimately I’m sure he came back because he had the best chance to win and would likely be the featured TE for sure.
The Texans played coy by allowing Griffin to go out on the market and test the waters but the current must be fine here in the Bayou City.
Griffin just completed his four-year, $2.2 million rookie deal, paying him about $560,000 per season so I’d imagine he’d get a slight pay bump to stay with the Texans.
The numbers have yet to be released but my best guess is that he got a three-year deal around $7 million with half of that — $3.5 million — guaranteed.
UPDATE: The Chron’s Aaron Wilson reports that the deal is worth slightly over $9 million.
It could be more or less but I think I’m right on target with the earnings.
It actually would surprise me if he received more.
And I’m certainly surprised but it goes to show that Griffin is being rewarded for his work.
Bill O’Brien is quite fond of Griffin in the Texans’ offense and things could continue to roll fine with him being a key part of it.
Griffin, 27, caught 50 passes for 442 yards and two touchdowns in all 16 games (five starts) in 2016.
Those numbers were the best of his career along with being targeted a record 74 times this past season in O’Brien‘s offense.
Go Texans.
