It’s NFL Combine time and the Houston Texans are all up in Indianapolis trying to get a peek at some of the nation’s top prospects that will be declaring themselves for the draft next month.
It’s NFL Combine time and the Houston Texans are all up in Indianapolis trying to get a peek at some of the nation’s top prospects that will be declaring themselves for the draft next month.
All the Houston Texans brass — Rick Smith, Bill O’Brien and even guys like Sean Ryan and Mike Devlin are on-hand along with the rest of the scout team to gauge how best to make this team better through the draft.
There a lot of needs that we could address/build for the future through the draft such as settling the quarterback, offensive line and possibly on the tight end front as well as in our secondary.
Regardless of what happens, we all hope the team makes the right decision in terms of ensuring this team remains in contention for winning the coveted chip that we all hope to see someday.
As you know, addressing the quarterback need is one of the concerns because of the lackluster play of Brock Osweiler.
It makes sense for the Texans to invest in a quarterback early in the draft and they might actually do that this year.
But here’s the kicker.
According to Patrick Starr of State of the Texans, the team has interviewed top QB prospect Patrick Mahomes II.
The Texas Tech standout — who has passed for more than 11,000 yards in his collegiate career — is considered a top prospect by many and likely to go early.
The Texans pick at No. 25.
Will they trade up to get him?
We’ll have to see.
Here’s a striking quote that Starr also noted in his piece in regard to Mahomes speaking of his abilities to the media:
"“I mean, it would definitely be awesome. That’s the dream.” Mahomes said to possibly be drafted in the 1st round. “You want to be a first round guy. But for me it’s all about going to the right team, the right organization. I just want to get coached really hard. I want to have every chance to go out there and prove my game every single day.”"
He certainly doesn’t fit the mold of a Bill O’Brien quarterback with his far from gun-shy style — the Gunslinger is his nickname — as he’s quite a improvisational quarterback.
Hell, Mike Mayock of the NFL Network has compared him to Jay Cutler.
That’s not necessarily a flattering allegory but at least he was compared to an NFL quarterback.
But Mahomes has proved that he can be a pocket-passer and that’s what he’ll have to do if he wants a part of the Texans offensive system.
He’s willing to be coached hard and we all know that’s how BOB rolls.
O’Brien has made it no secret that he ultimately values the interviews as one of the two of most important traits in determining if a guy is a right fit for the team.
Did the Texans like what he had to say?
We’ll find out before April 27th sooner or later.
Mahomes passed for 5,052 yards while throwing 41 touchdowns to 10 interceptions in Kliff Kingsbury‘s highly-intensive offense at Tech in 2016.
Go Texans.
