The Houston Texans are just three days away from being able to start talking with players to be able to sign deals.

The Houston Texans are just three days away from being able to start talking with players to be able to sign deals.

And you know what?

The red-letter date of Tuesday, March 7th will be here before we know it.

The Houston Texans have some slight retooling to do with their roster and one of the most important needs — a reliable quarterback — is certainly at the top.

The Texans thought they had their guy in signing away Brock Osweiler last off season to a four-year, $72 million deal — with $38 million guaranteed — but with his lackluster play, the franchise is still on the hunt to ensure that position is solidified.

Osweiler passed for 2,957 yards last season, throwing 15 touchdowns to 16 interceptions with a 55.3 QBR, all numbers that put him in the bottom of the pack in terms of starting quarterbacks.

Although Osweiler displays tremendous athleticism, his decision-making under center continues to be under scrutiny and it certainly has had an effect on our offense being ranked 29th for 2016.

It’s not clear what the Texans plan to do with Osweiler but he’s owed $18 million and I feel the team would be compelled to carry him at least as a backup QB on the 2017 roster.

We’ll have to see about that.

But enough about B.O. — here’s the latest in the rumor mill about who wants to quarterback for the Texans.

According to Charlie Campbell of WalterFootball.com, quarterback Jay Cutler is interested in joining the Texans.

I’m positive many free agent quarterbacks would love the position because this team does have some fine offensive pieces but do the Texans necessarily want him?

Campbell writes that Cutler is expected to be released, particularly because he’s not a viable trade asset at this moment.

I would honestly think that there’s some interest but he’s not the highest of priorities to sign.

The 33-year-old veteran QB will also have to take a tremendous pay cut from $18.1 million per season salary as he’s on the fourth year of a seven-year, $126.7 million deal.

This is because the Texans have approximately $25 million to spend before any type of roster cuts.

Cutler also throws a ton of interceptions so I’m not sure if he’d be an improvement at the position.

Even though his season was cut short by injury, he managed to throw four touchdowns to five interceptions along with 1,059 yards to boot through six games in 2016.

But in 2015, he threw 21 touchdowns to career-high 11 interceptions and 28/18 in 2014.

So if one looks at the numbers, he’d be a decent add but there’s that darn personality of his.

I wouldn’t necessarily categorize Cutler as a leader of men as he doesn’t show emotion and seems just focused on doing his job and collecting a paycheck.

The quarterback is a position of power and anyone tasked in said position must emanate such.

I don’t get that out of Cutler and he’d be such a cancer to the locker room, it’s not even worth taking a chance on him.

I personally feel the Texans should take a pass on him even if were to become available to sign.

We don’t need his “laissez-faire” attitude on Kirby Drive and I’d much rather see a guy that’s committed to winning football games and rallying his teammates.

I see absolutely none of that with Cutler.

We’ll have to see.

Go Texans.
