I had thought for just a smidgen that Daryl Morey was going to be quiet this year in terms of the trade deadline as the Houston Rockets are 40-18, good for third place in the West.
But you know and I know that certainly isn’t the case.
He will always listen to trade offers and is dead-set on ensuring that improvements can always be made to the team that we have.
We’ve seen Serge Ibaka get traded, DeMarcus Cousins was the next guy; and finally, Lou Williams fell right into our lap.
We only had to give up Corey Brewer and this year’s first-round pick to get him so I consider that an even trade on both sides that fulfills respective needs.
But as the trade rumors continue to heat up, there’s one that we shouldn’t be too surprised about.
According to ESPN Rockets beat reporter Calvin Watkins, Patrick Beverley is generating a ton of interest as the deadline nears:
Yes, Bev is a coveted asset because his contract was signed before the new collective bargaining agreement as he is on a four-year, $23 million deal that pays him about $6 million per season.
It’s certainly cap-friendly and the tools he provides — defense, shooting, attitude — are all tangible assets that team would want in a basketball player to acquire.
Each of the rumored teams interested have desirable pieces as well so there is some rationale to putting him on the block.
But not so fast…
Watkins squashed the rumor — at least for now — that Bev was on the market to be traded:
This makes sense as I don’t want to see one of my favorite players get traded.
I wear his jersey proudly for Pete’s Sake!
But any way, Bev must be feeling really good at this time as he has gone from a begotten Russia cast-off to a popular starter that teams actually want to acquire.
But ultimately, it would take a lot of convincing for the Rockets mind to be swayed to put him on the block.
As Daryl Morey writes in his Twitter profile, “opportunity is not a lengthy visitor” and he certainly is wanting to ensure that he takes advantage that every opportunity that’s in front of him.
We’ll have to see how this actually shakes out before tomorrow but I can bet my bottom dollar that Mr. 94 Feet will be right with this team after the deadline has passed.
Beverley, 28, has been averaging 9.6 points, 5.6 rebounds, 4.4 assists with a shooting line of .435/.390/.814.
Go Rockets.
