Houston Texans: Wes Welker To Join The Coaching Staff?
The off season is now in full swing for Houston Texans fans and while it will be long one for this franchise, it should provide for some interesting wrinkles as time progresses.
The off season is now in full swing for Houston Texans fans and while it will be long one for this franchise, it should provide for some interesting wrinkles as time progresses.
Despite this team achieving a 9-7 record for the third straight season and the second consecutive playoff berth, there are certainly holes to fill to make this even better.
Now mind you, we don’t need a complete overhaul because most of the key ingredients are there but there are always ways we can improve.
The top priority for this team is to improve an offense that was ranked near the bottom of the barrel for most of 2016.
The first step for the franchise was to reshuffle the duties of top-tiers of the coaching staff.
George Godsey was shown the door, while Romeo Crennel was promoted to assistant head coach and Mike Vrabel as the new defensive coordinator.
Bill O’Brien has now apparently hired himself as the offensive coordinator where will have total control of calling the plays.
This is helpful as he’ll be able to focus on the most important thing this team needs to show some uptick on for 2017.
But here’s a tidbit for you…
According to Texans’ Insider Patrick Starr of State of the Texans, former wide out Wes Welker is expected to join the staff likely sometime ahead of the upcoming season.
Welker is at that point of his career where retirement from the game is strong because of the immense amount of hits the man has taken throughout this career.
Every time I looked up, I’d hear that Welker had suffered yet another concussion so I’d imagine he had to outweigh the possible risks if he kept on playing because ultimately his health is most important.
This certainly means that the Houston Texans would be adding yet another former New England Patriot to the staff but it remains to be seen what his actually role will be.
The Houston Texans already have Sean Ryan employed as the wide receivers coach, Welker’s specialty, so I’d imagine he’d be around assisting him and wherever else he’s needed.

Starr also writes that his strong ties to Bill O’Brien, Mike Vrabel and Larry Izzo back his playing days will help make the transition a lot easier, to which I agree.
I’m positive that his expertise would be much appreciated by the staff.
Although he has no coaching experience, he’s the type of player who could thrive in this type of environment.
He was a good player but not great and usually those types make excellent coaches.
It’ll be interesting to see when we’ll hear this announcement as this is something I’d actually be looking forward to.
Welker, 34, caught 903 balls for 9,924 yards and 50 touchdowns through 13 seasons of play, mostly with the Patriots.
Go Texans.
