The off season is now in full swing for Houston Texans fans and while it will be long one for this franchise, it should provide for some interesting wrinkles as time progresses.

The off season is now in full swing for Houston Texans fans and while it will be long one for this franchise, it should provide for some interesting wrinkles as time progresses.

Despite this team achieving a 9-7 record for the third straight season and the second consecutive playoff berth, there are certainly holes to fill to make this even better.

Now mind you, we don’t need a complete overhaul because most of the key ingredients are there but there are always ways we can improve.

The top priority for this team is to improve an offense that was ranked near the bottom of the barrel for most of 2016.

The first step for the franchise was to reshuffle the duties of top-tiers of the coaching staff.

George Godsey was shown the door, while Romeo Crennel was promoted to assistant head coach and Mike Vrabel as the new defensive coordinator.

Bill O’Brien has now apparently hired himself as the offensive coordinator where will have total control of calling the plays.

This is helpful as he’ll be able to focus on the most important thing this team needs to show some uptick on for 2017.

But here’s a tidbit for you…

According to Charlie Campbell of Walter Football, watch out for Chip Kelly being hired on the Houston Texans’ staff as an offensive assistant.

It’s Senior Bowl time and coaches from all points are in Mobile, Ala. to take a look at the nation’s top talent in the college ranks.

It’s also a mecca of networking for unemployed coaches to get gigs if they so wish to desire one.

But why Kelly?

Despite his track record as an NFL head coach, he is certainly one of the brightest offensive minds in football today and his expertise could used in the upcoming season.

Campbell also notes that O’Brien and Kelly have a mutual respect for each others talents and is strong proponent of the spread option.

Although Brock Osweiler is not the type of quarterback that would thrive in Kelly’s system, Campbell mentions that the mantra may change if they were draft top prospects such as Deshaun Watson or Patrick Mahomes II.

Both quarterbacks are quite intriguing to me but I really like the shot we have at taking Mahomes when offered the opportunity.

The Houston Texans’ first round pick with be 25th this year so it’ll be interesting to see if they will draft a quarterback that high.

So moving forward, I’d keep an eye on what the Houston Texans do from here.

If they somehow are able to land Kelly, expect the team to draft a quarterback high so that they have a prototype for the new system that they’d run.

But if not, which is highly likely, expect the Texans to address other needs such as the offensive line as a priority first.

We’re just about three months away from Draft Day which will be April 27th.

We’ll have to see how things play out.

Go Texans.
