Recent reports suggest Philip Rivers does not want to play with the Chargers after their move to Los Angeles. The Houston Texans should capitalize!
You readers may recall a few weeks back when I suggested that The Houston Texans should consider a run at Tony Romo.
Well here is another option: Philip Rivers.
So many recent articles have surfaced lately, including this one from Yahoo Sports.
In all, it appears as if Rivers is very hesitant to want to move with the franchise outside of San Diego. This is a big indicator that a trade could well be in the works.
But with the most recent report, Rivers is content on being in Los Angeles and will not force a trade.
At least for now…
But if the possibility were to come up again in the near future, the one team that needs to enter this sweepstakes are the Houston Texans.
It has been all too clear that the quarterback core of Brock Osweiler and Tom Savage are not exactly holding up their own on this squad. In fact, many fans would agree that they are the weak links. Osweiler even more so than Savage.
Bill O’Brien will be returning as head coach next season, and Brandon Weeden has only one year left in his current contract.
The black hole that is the Texans offense needs to be filled, and quick. And the draft is not necessarily going to help matters.
It is true that Rivers is not exactly an All-Star or MVP type of quarterback that a Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers are. But there are plenty of upside qualities to note about the long time San Diego starter.
1. His pass consistency
With the exception of his 2005 season, by far his roughest, Rivers has thrown for a career completion percentage of 64.4 percent. This is already better than both Osweiler and Savage, both of whom hover around a 59 percent completion rate.
Additionally, he averages around eight yards per pass. This is a significant upgrade from both of the Texans quarterbacks, whom average only around six yards per pass.
He has also had a consistent passer rating in the 90 to100 range over his career.
Clearly, Rivers knows how to better connect with his receivers.

2. His veteran presence
Rivers will be going into his 14th season in 2017. While some organizations may see that as a weakness, the Texans should note this as a great feat of strength.
Osweiler and Savage are in need of some obvious seasoning. And with the need for more quarterback depth, Rivers can fill in that role quite nicely.
Not only that, but a change of scenery can do Rivers a world of good.
The Houston Texans will have a lot of thinking to do regarding how to upgrade this low ranking offense.
Rivers just may be an answer for them to consider.
We’ll have to see how this drama plays out.
